-A. The above chart makes sense (assuming parademic familiarity) and seems very applicable, but keep in mind it is a heuristic model. If a dive into the deeper ethnography and biology about this one would find it is based very little evidence and lots of speculation. Its fine for communicating a concept but is not an accurate model to base policy upon. Cultural Flexibility Was Key for Early Humans to Survive Extreme Dry Periods in Southern Africa. The ability to be flexible through the innovation of technology helped early humans to survive prolonged periods of pronounced aridification. The early human techno tradition, known as Howiesons Poort, associated with Homo Sapiens who lived in southern Africa about 66,000 to 59,000 years ago indicates that during this period of pronounced aridification they developed cultural innovations that allowed them to significantly enlarge the range of environments they occupied.
-1.1. Analogies in Major Historical Transitions. In Big History there are many transitions as complexity seems to grow in the natural ecosystems and social historical development. There are still many questions concerning why the transitions happened at all. For example, in going from hunter gatherer to an agricultural lifestyle, the amount of work required seemed to radically increase, after much of the land had been settled in small agricultural communities why did large cities evolve with little connection to agriculture except to consume, and why did the scientific revolution and industrial revolution predominantly first occur in Western Europe even though many of the inventions had been imported from elsewhere, and the current question- can a civilization, that is so far from equilibrium in both unsustainable fossil energy consumption and levels of development, find a path to productive sustainability. ¶ Can other models and analogies be made to other important historical transitions such as anthropocene.

-2.1. One thing that enables quacks is the creation of mistrust of medicine. How Did Biotech Become a Hollywood Supervillain. “War for the Planet of the Apes” is the latest in a long line of movies to find a ready made baddie in biopharma’s push the envelope labs and bounteous balance sheets. It’s a cinematic tradition that’s often frustrating to the industry’s thousands of employees, who view themselves not as faceless profiteers, but as bravehearted scientists questing to outflank human suffering. After all, you can blame ill advised biotech scientists for the global pestilences in “Mission: Impossible 2” and “I Am Legend”, plus the murderous uber sharks in “Deep Blue Sea”. And it was the bean counters of Big Pharma who sent the one armed man after Richard Kimble in 1993’s “The Fugitive”. who bumped off a do gooder in the 2005 adaptation of John le Carré’s “The Constant Gardener,” and who engineered a crass insider trading scheme in “Side Effects”. Big Pharma is a perfect movie villain because it’s combining the mad scientist of science fiction with the big banks, the big money villains of dramas and thrillers. [Cartoon]. 5.2, 9, •170514-3‡1↓. How Scientifically Plausible Is the ‘Simian Flu’ in Planet of the Apes. When it comes to biology, there’s very little that can’t be done—in theory. What’s more, many of the characteristics found in these fictional viruses have already been produced by nature.
-3. Counterintuitive. The Upside of Rotting Carcasses. Large animals dying en masse are crucial to the Serengeti, and they aren’t the only ones. ¶ Pesky American bison, colloquially known as buffalo, were dying naturally (in mass drownings). But by the late 1880s the distinctly unnatural forces of rifle wielding white settlers, industrialists and cattle ranchers had nearly driven the bison to extinction. The collapse was catastrophic for the Native Americans who relied on the massive beasts for food and clothing, not to mention the buffalo themselves. Modern studies on another drowning prone large herbivore suggest that the bison carcasses may have been doing far more than just stinking up creek beds. African wildebeests that die en masse on the Mara River in Kenya and Tanzania not only feed scavengers, but also release key nutrients directly into the river. As the carcasses decompose, maggots hatch, and mats of brown and green algae and bacteria grow over the bones, providing year round sustenance for the local fish. Humans have disrupted nearly every large herbivore migration on the planet, and continue to kill off these key animals faster than they can kill themselves.

Flooding earlier this year affected 600,000 people and left behind standing water.

-9. Things Which Have Once Been Conjoined: Science Fiction, Contagion, and Magic in the Age of Social Media. Few networked phenomena have been met with more ambivalence than that of contagion, the idea that things (memes, viral videos, fashion) spread from person to person in a way that is similar to an epidemic; that is, people believe certain things or participate in certain behaviors without necessarily having “decided” to do so. Instead, the chances of “contracting” an idea, a fashion, or a new technology come down to the structural position in a network. Given its identification with epidemiological contagion, it is not surprising that social contagion brings with it a negative valence, conjuring up fears of loss of autonomy, of being reduced to “hosts” for the “viral” propagation of information in a network. Contagion is at the heart of the fear and fascination of the zombie. It is also part of the latest panic in politics, one that centers on a vision of an electorate easily manipulated through fake news propagated through social media. ¶ Combined with the contagion of fake news, “majority illusion” may results in decidedly pathological behaviors, including “Pizzagate” and white terrorism, among other things. ¶
However, the term “contagion” suggests more than networks or even epidemiology. While the etymology of the word is grounded in touching and contact (from the Latin contagion), it also emerges out of earlier understandings of maladies attributed to connection—including connection at a distance 170312-3 ↓+. In particular, it echoes nineteenth century anthropological theories of magic in J.G Frazer, the “contagion” that could bring misfortune down upon the victims of witchcraft through the theory that what had once been together was henceforth forever linked. 2.1, 5.2↑. -Quote: This is my favorite aria. This is Maria Callas. This is "Andrea Chenier", Umberto Giordano. This is Madeleine. She's saying how during the French Revolution, a mob set fire to her house, and her mother died... saving her. "Look, the place that cradled me is burning." Can you hear the heartache in her voice. Can you feel it, Joe. In come the strings, and it changes everything. The music fills with a hope, and that'll change again. Listen... listen..."I bring sorrow to those who love me". Oh, that single cello. "It was during this sorrow that love came to me". A voice filled with harmony. It says, "Live still, I am life. Heaven is in your eyes. Is everything around you just the blood and mud. I am divine. I am oblivion. I am the god... that comes down from the heavens, and makes of the Earth a heaven. I am love... I am love". – Joe Miller (Tom Hanks), Philadelphia [Photo, Poster].

-*. The other aspect is the physical operational environment that is FUN: Favorable – has the infrastructure that supports operations, roads, airports, distribution, power, environment is benign to living things; Uncertain – no idea what is available or if what was available is still available, unknown if the area is lethal; Negative – does not have infrastructure to support operation, environment is dangerous or lethal to living things. Both FUN and HUP are further nuanced if they are active + or passive – hinderances or facilitation, and if they are Persistent <> or Variable ><. One can get some strange social physics from HUP and FUN: (FUN or HUP) (<> or ><) (+ + = +, + + = –, + – = +, – + = +, + – = –, – + = –, – – = +, – – = –) = Null. [Meme].
-A. Believers – The most ardent backers for or against aid and support in a biodisaster environment. There are often times due to deep shared values and sense of having a personal link. This can be more important to other personal identification such as religion, political, ethnicity, family, social status, economics. Demographically, they are also much older (chronologically and knowledge) than other groups. This is the same as one finds with continued belief in a pseudoscience or a disproved concept, no matter how much evidence there is that this is destructive.
-B. Conditionals – Are supportive in they get what they want and are likely to be disappointed. May or may not accept compromises between what they want and what other groups want, depending if the see the compromise as fair, or they don’t give up core values. The group can be volatile in terms of changing if they are hostile or positive. In fact we see this can change within a matter of hours. Remain attached to ideas and policy, but not necessarily feeling they have a personal connection to the leaders. If they succeed or not is not necessarily seen as being the same as a personal loss or gain. Tend to be more focused on future results than the present.
-C. Curious/Skeptical – Potential believers or resisters, nether for nor against. Tend to see current actions rather than eventual results. More willing to compromise that does not hurt their current status quo, and tend to be passive, not actively resisting or supporting. Leaders viewed on if they appear to be working for their interests or not.
-D. Resisters. The flip of Believers, in fact may become the new Believers. Concerned about fundamental matters and see that they will lose more if the aid and support operations succeed than if they fail. Feel no personal connection with leaders, indeed may feel they needs and wants are ignored, if not directly threatened.

- 170611-3.2: <ADDED 170723>. Why Has Healthcare Become Such a Target for Cyber Attackers. More than 16m patient records were stolen from healthcare organizations in the United States and related parties in 2016. That year, healthcare was the fifth most targeted industry when it came to cyber attacks. Earlier this year, Britain’s National Health Service was crippled by a ransomware attack that locked up the computers holding many of its records and booking systems. As connected technology becomes even more embedded in healthcare, this cyber threat is only likely to grow. But if we want to protect our health from cyber attacks, we shouldn’t fear technology. Instead, we need to understand it better and realize that the threat becomes much worse when people make simple mistakes. Hospitals Face Growing Cybersecurity Threats. Just a decade ago, pretty much all health records were paper. Then, in a period of a few years, hospitals switched to electronic records. But the security of digital health data has not kept up with its growth. Other industries have devoted more than 12 percent of their IT budgets to cybersecurity. Health care averages just half that. ¶ Demand for cybersecurity talent in health care has exploded. But it's not that easy to recruit. Chief Information Officers (CIO) are overly stressed with everything from security to regulation. When I talk to CIOs about coming into health care, the answer is usually “No way, it's too complicated. It's way simpler to do banking or oil and gas”. It's also much more lucrative to work in other industries. The average advertised pay for health care cybersecurity positions is 25 percent lower than in finance. A biodisaster would be the most lucrative and destructive time for a parademic of medical cyberattacks. Not only are there more people who will need medical care, but with supply and communication disruptions it would also be possible to threaten a cyberattack and get a ransom, without having the ability to conduct such an attack. Additionally these attacks will be in an environment that fosters rumor, so a single attack that caused a temporary problem could be seen as hundreds that are permanent shut downs.
