-1. #Glossary. Biocide in parademic usage is the destruction of life, a biocide event. -2. Noise and light pollution are for the most part not considered a priority as threats to health and environment, if considered at all, but some take it very seriously. The Quietest Place in America Is Becoming a Warzone. After years of painstaking acoustic measurements, Hempton identified this spot on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula as the quietest place in the U.S.—the spot most free of our man made noise pollution. He has nurtured this square inch, guided people to it, and protected it from encroaching cacophony of our modern world. But now it faces its biggest threat yet. We look at trash on the beach or in the forest with disdain. Noise isn’t any different. It pollutes the landscape, discombobulates wildlife, and can take years off our lives. Yet quiet is disappearing at an alarming rate. The furthest you can get from a road in the Lower 48 is a whopping 19 miles, making cars one of the most ubiquitous sources of noise pollution. Air traffic is increasingly crowding our skies. The 2011 WHO report, Burden of Disease from
Environmental Noise, found that Europeans were losing nearly 1.7 million years of healthy life annually to noise pollution. While it may seem surprising that noise can literally shorten our lives, the disruption of sleep takes a toll, as does the acute stress noise causes. There’s also evidence noise stresses our bodies out in ways that affects our heart, gut, and nervous system. The report found noise results in the loss of 61,000 healthy years to heart stress and causes 45,000 years in children’s cognitive impairment annually. So yes, we’re actually killing ourselves with sound. -180114-3.1‡↓. [Chart].
-3. Besides The First Report Is Almost Always Wrong, another weakness of digital ethnography is that the search engine learns one’s preferences, same as with live informants, and tends to select items that your profile suggests, to include if its algorithm says you prefer false information*. This skewing is one reason to occasionally clear your cookies, I can only imagine what my profile is with biological hazards, fakoids -1↑, 3.3↓, climate change, pro and anti-vax, propaganda, illegal migrants, abuse of position, fiction, economics ..... I either confuse the poor algorithm or I am now flagged as a national security threat. Anyway the virtual community has urban lore about searches that come up with unexpected results. I was looking up the longue duree that moral panics in the US are likely to be recycles of Puritan anti Catholicism. Apparently I am correct -2- -3- -4- -5- -6- -7- that there is a correlation, though not causation at Catholics now join Protestants for moral panics -4↓. However; one of the finds startled me, Maria Monk and the Pornography of the Puritan which listed tropes that are repeated for today’s moral panics: virtue in distress, murdered children, imprisonment, underground passages and chambers, arbitrary authority, cruelty and claustrophobia. Besides being chagrined it presented a dilemma. This made exactly the point I was looking for and is a credible source for how this is valid, but there was a context of sex (guess I have some Puritan leanings). Decided to include this item as it illustrated two behaviors. 1) that with the intriguing headline people are likely to read (or reject) without further consideration [Photo]. 2) A good sources of information are not always acceptable. Part of my curating is that sometimes I find a source that is intolerable in someway, but I can usually find the same or variation of the same article posted by a different source. | There are also questions of what is available on the net and having access to everything what does one focus on.

-3.1. Billionaires Gone Wild, the American media landscape, like the rest of the country, is being reshaped by the whims of the ultra rich. How to Pay Attention. We learn how to pay attention and what to pay attention to from other people, and we attend within technological and mediated settings designed to shape our attentional practices. No one pays attention alone. Attention is stuck deep in the foundations of how we experience the world and the subject of contemporary debate about social media. There are multiple examples of the damage that can be done by social media spreading false information -2- -3- -4-, if one does not wisely choose what to pay attention too.
3.2. One of the weaknesses to countering false and potentially fatal health and environmental influences is that time is spent crafting the message to correct, debunk, clarify, inform about the fact, but little time is spent on understanding the audience the message is directed to. One perspective that may help is identifying where people are rigid, have difficulty changing, and where they are malleable, open to change or have only limited/ nothing to change. Rigid areas are those that end to cause backlash: Personal identity, attacking venerated people, supporting hated people, explanations for how the world works, coping behaviors, what has lead to success before. Soft areas tend to have less entrenched opinions, topics one is still learning and questioning, crisis where worldview is not working, where there is no threat. In addition; change is incremental. Never expect living organisms to change, adapt, modify, accept, if they have to change everything at once. What one is looking for is not the changing of minds, but behavior. That is done by creating information that repeatedly nudges perception, which changes interpretation, changing understanding, changing behavior. Not a lot, not fast, just enough to appreciate and do when necessary.

Appointees in the health department have deleted positive references to Obamacare, altered a report that undermined the administration’s positions on refugees and added anti-abortion language to the strategic plan – part of an ideological overhaul of the agency’s research office. While every administration puts its imprint on the executive branch and promotes ideas that advance its own agenda, this one has ventured several steps further – from scrubbing links to climate change studies from an EPA website to canceling an Interior Department study on coal mining risks and suppressing reports on water contamination and the dangers of formaldehyde. | -3↑, Why Religious Health Care Restrictions Often Take Patients by Surprise, Insurers Can Send Patients To Religious Hospitals That Restrict Reproductive Care, How Catholic Bishops Are Shaping Health Care in Rural America. -5.1. PDWN alludes to the fact that Emergency Management often times gets blamed for disasters that it did not cause, that do not have the funding or power to prevent, and lack the funding and capabilities to do it’s job in the first place. Add to this political appointees and agendas, conflicting missions (continuity of government and disaster response in FEMA’s case) agencies become easy targets for blame, a whipping boy, often times by the same people who created the conditions of failure. It’s (Mostly) Not FEMA’s Fault. The problems blamed on emergency managers are often caused by the shortcomings of other governmental bodies, both before and after disasters.

-7. Aug 1, 1774, Joseph Priestley Discovers Oxygen. This was a significant identification of what existed but people did not know about. Before this it was thought the lungs helped cool the body, which to be fair if ones understanding of medicine was the 4 humors, the logical conclusion based on empirical observation (not the same as evidence based) would lead to this interpretation of data. People who die from asphyxiation, or nearly do, have an increase in body temperature as well as reddening of the skin. Those who survive tend to sweat profusely. In late 1919 and early 1920, scientists and canners worked with the government to protect the public from the deadly toxin. a time when cans were novel and unfamiliar, and when they inspired distaste, fear, and panic. These experiences still shape America, and how it eats, today. The new canning industry struggled to convince American consumers to consider its products viable and trustworthy. There were many reasons why early consumers weren’t all that interested in trying these new offerings. For one, the long hours that cans of food were boiled left the contents mushy, with an unattractive texture and taste. Even before tasting the food, many Americans were skeptical. To people accustomed to seeing and touching and smelling the foods they were about to eat, these hard sided, opaque metal objects did not seem like food. The new method of industrial production and new way of eating felt foreign to American consumers, who had grown up eating food that was more local, more perishable, and easier to fit into existing categories. As the United States entered an era of industrialization and urbanization, the unfamiliar can embodied this time of rapid change. Earlier still there was that new fangled fire and suspicions about eating the ruined cooked food, [Cartoon, Cartoon, Cartoon, Cartoon].
-9. Lyme Disease, Climate Change, and Science (or the Lack of It). In a new book, a journalist tries to make sense of a baffling epidemic that bitterly divides doctors and leaves patients caught in the middle. The increasingly bitter debate over Lyme disease is something like the partisan divide in American politics, characterized less by warring sides than by parallel universes. In one universe, she writes, are traditional infectious disease physicians, who see Lyme as a bacterial nuisance but not a crisis. Often relatively easy to diagnose and even easier to treat with a few weeks of antibiotics. It is seldom dangerous and very rarely deadly. In the other universe are patients, many debilitated and suffering, who believe they are afflicted by “chronic Lyme,” and their sympathetic doctors, who call themselves “Lyme literate”. These doctors diagnose the disease based on symptoms rather than blood tests, and are willing to treat patients with unorthodox antibiotic courses and other treatments, with little scientific evidence to support their use. #Book Lyme: The First Epidemic of Climate Change -2-, Preview, [Cover]. -0↑, 180805-VCP-UK -9. Paranoia is the tendency to assume other people are trying to harm you when their actual motivations are unclear, and this tendency is increased when interacting with someone of a higher social status or opposing political beliefs. Intense paranoia is also a symptom of mental ill health, and is more common among people who perceive themselves to have low social rank. We believe our findings could shed light on why paranoia is more common in those who are struggling on the social ladder and excluded by society. If true, this could explain adverse behavior toward people who have come to help in medical situations. -180513-1.1*¶2A>10, <ADDED 180617>2. It is typical during and after fear producing events for ignorance (that is lessons not learned) to reemerge as panic and overabundance of caution, sometimes years later. Not only did the same happen with thousands of people being isolated from Ebolaphobia, but this just happened three months ago in Uganda. Annals of Health Scares: Patient Investigated for Ebola Virus at Denver Health (Updated). Denver Health and Hospitals officials were waiting for test results from a state health lab but said that they do not believe the man has Ebola. The man had been working with sick and dead people in an area of eastern Congo where a recent outbreak of Ebola had largely dissipated with no new Ebola cases reported over the past 45 days. Three members of the ambulance crew that picked up the man were also being held in isolation (more lesson not learned, Ebola can’t be transmitted unless there are symptoms). H5N1 Comment -A↓: If this man was in the eastern DR Congo, it's highly unlikely he was anywhere near Ebola. If he was in Bukavu, for example, he was 1,823 km by road from Mbandaka, near the epicenter of the recent outbreak. If he had been in the eastern Republic of the Congo he might just conceivably have been exposed to someone who'd popped across the Congo River from Mbandaka in the northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo. But they're two different countries with annoyingly similar names. Republic of the Congo has never reported an Ebola case. Unsurprisingly, the man has tested negative for Ebola.
-A. It is easy to mock the over reaction displayed here, but recognize that fear is highly contagious and affects cognition and Public Health officials may have access to information the general public does not, DR Congo: An Undiagnosed Outbreak in North Kivu (Updated), however the comment because for hemorrhagic fever there is bleeding in all the orifices, gives one pause as that is not a characteristic of Ebola but of fictional hype [Picture] which is why the H5N1 version -180513-1.1↑ was used as it had contrary information. In parademic it may be the most subtle clue that indicates something is amiss. DR Congo: Emergency Management Activated Against an Unknown Disease That Has Killed 15 in Mangina, North Kivu. Ebola Hits Congo Days after Last Outbreak Ended. Like some infectious diseases, people can be asymptomatic of having fear, not recognizing the judgement may be impaired, or one can be an asymptomatic super spreader of fear. This transmission is usually via electronic where the infected person’s wild eyes and foaming mouth are not visible. Making the decision to over react or not puts officials are in a tough spot. Despite all the evidence if someone turns out to be infectious with a fatal disease, and it does not need to be Ebola, they are in big trouble and will likely lose their position. Not knowing if and what infectious disease may be involved, would make the same hard decision for isolating the medical personnel. These people who would know medical protective procedures and what to look for during the 20+ days before Ebola symptoms appear and they become infectious, but the agent was still unknown so whether or not it was Ebola, caution would be appropriate but not extreme measures such as forced quarantine. The last time there was Ebola quarantine it went to the level of violation of civil rights -180513-1.1>5, and was called isolation which implies the person was infectious not that it was a biosafety measure in case the are still incubating a disease. -B. Unknown at this time if DR Congo: A Disease Similar to the Plague Decimates Pigs and Goats in Kasai Central is related to Cluster of presumptive Ebola cases in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This may be a zoodemic that is concurrent (syndemic), or a separate disease outbreak [Map]. It is known that Bubonic Plague and Ebola can be similar causing confusion about which one is dealing with, Could the Black Death Actually Have Been an Ebola Like Virus 2013. Both areas are also facing food security stress for a few years. This indicates the possibility of a polybiocalamity that is contributing to increased vulnerability to disease outbreaks. The DRC's health ministry says there's no indication of a link between the outbreaks, but I would not rely on this assessment, then again it is more worrisome if this is not another wave, that the two are unconnected by H2H (+ here to help, hazardous to humans or health, host to host), in part because this is Ebola in a Conflict Zone, Response to Congo’s New Ebola Outbreak Highly Complex, with the complication of a likely contentious election. Twitter's One Step Closer to Figuring Out Why It Sucks, known for its perpetual feed of virulence and targeted harassment, is turning to academia to answer why is it so bad. Looking at echo chambers and uncivil discourse to figure out how communities form around political discussions on Twitter, and the challenges that may arise as those discussions develop. What is the extent to which people acknowledge and engage with diverse viewpoints to develop algorithms that can discern between incivility and intolerant discourse. The other look is at how people use Twitter, and how exposure to a variety of perspectives and backgrounds can decrease prejudice and discrimination – hopefully that is not the actual research design, should be how exposure to a range of twitter with diverse opinions influences prejudice and discrimination. It’s inarguably – again assume this is the author’s terminology, a research design would say probably or likely – thing for Twitter to examine how its platform is used and how that impacts its users – especially if that impact is severely unhealthy – ain but what if the company is accused of spinning the results as has happened big oil and soda. And it’s also inarguably a good thing – not at all neutral, in fact assumes conclusion – for this scrutinization to come from outside parties, though there is inherent bias in the chosen topics given they were hand selected by Twitter itself. This research is part and parcel of the company’s larger mission to make its service less abusive and more productive – an admirable and essential effort. One that’s sorely belated. [Cartoon]. Open Offices Can Lead to Closed Minds$. The supposed aim of open plan offices is to encourage more contact between workers, leading to greater productivity. Two Harvard Business School academics tested this proposition. They found that face to face interactions declined in open plan offices, and that the volume of e-mails increased, lowering productivity. It is suggested that employees value their privacy and find new ways to preserve it.

Deceptive marketing of a dangerous procedure with no proven benefit, including to women who’ve been treated for cancer, is egregious. Misleading marketing of unproven treatments might keep some women from receiving appropriate, evidence based care for their conditions. GOOP is not specifically mentioned, but has been associated with vaginal rejuvenation. Goops devices are neutral (basically smooth rocks that neither help or harm vaginal track) though they do have the problem women may not seek care for a medical condition, or could injure themselves.
