Hidden in the large overlooked The Safer Affordable Fuel Efficient (SAFE), Vehicles Rule for Model Year 2021–2026, Passenger Cars and Light Trucks, Draft Environmental Impact Statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are some startling figures: the Trump administration believes there will be a 7 degree Fahrenheit rise in average global temperatures by 2100, and the report suggest we not even bother trying to stop it. -4. The End of HIV Transmission in the U.S.: A Once Unthinkable Dream Becomes an Openly Discussed Goal. A mere decade ago, 45,000 Americans a year were contracting HIV. Since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started collecting data on HIV related deaths just over 30 years ago, more than half a million of those people have died from AIDS now U.S. health officials and HIV experts are beginning to talk about a future in which transmission in the United States could be halted. -*. PDWN is itself a questionable source. This is by intent as part of its purposes is to mimic the chaotic information environment of a biocalamity/ parademic. Information during bioevents (which are actually constant, not a single bioevent that begins and end) are filled with panic, misinformation, manipulation of information, valid data, political and criminal exploitation, fragmented and out of sequence information, errors, misinterpreted evidence, skewed perceptions, fear mongering, propaganda, unrecognized satire (Poe’s Law), tangents, unclear cause and effect, etc. These could be labeled, but that defeats the learning goal, and in any case there is not reason to blindly accept PDWN’s opinions, selection of material, interpretation. Indeed if anyone ever does consider what PDWN shares without critical evaluation they not only miss the point, but are unusually tolerant of (or unable to identify), deliberate poor writing.
-4.1. #Document Beyond Social Contagion: Associative Diffusion and the Emergence of Cultural Variation. Contemporary societies exhibit remarkable and persistent cultural differences on issues as varied as musical taste and gun control. This cultural variation has been a longstanding topic of sociological inquiry because it is central to how social order, and the inequalities it is founded on, is maintained. In particular, research has focused on the tendency of cultural practices to co occur with one another. This cultural clustering – from clothing and lifestyle choices to consumption and religious behaviors – symbolically marks different categories of people. The different social identities these cultural boundaries delineate are typically undergirded by a variation in beliefs and dispositions. These divergent beliefs, structure differences in individuals’ political, economic and health behaviors.
-A. Whatever the underlying mechanism, the end result is a balkanized world in which people interact within culturally homogenous, and structurally separated cliques. But cultural diffusion often fails to trace network structure. Consider the recent surge in opposition to vaccinations as an example. Successful immunization campaigns virtually eradicated measles and other childhood diseases in the U.S. by the end of the twentieth century; but at the turn of the new millennium Americans’ faith in vaccines began to erode. The spread of anti-vaccination sentiments appears inconsistent with a network diffusion explanation. Parents who object to childhood vaccinations tend to be college educated and to have above average incomes. This is precisely the demographic that, up until recently, was most likely to comply with vaccination protocols. Indeed, as the passionate disagreements on California’s strict 2015 immunization law demonstrated, beliefs on vaccines cut through tight knit communities across the U.S. Hailing from the Oregon coast to the Texas heartland, anti-vaxxers, as they are colloquially called, have also become a constituency wooed by candidates on both sides of the political spectrum. Attitudes on vaccines, in other words, do not appear to follow the contours of network segregation in America.
-B. An actor adoption a cultural practice is different from how an actor interprets it. Behaviors around vaccines are strongly rooted in cultural beliefs. Injecting a biological agent using a hypodermic needle – without being able to observe this action’s purported effects – requires strong and unquestionable faith in the institutional authority of the medical profession. As work by historians and sociologists has demonstrated, recent changes in attitudes toward vaccines in the U.S. relate to changes in how Americans, predominantly those on the higher end of the socioeconomic ladder, understand their roles as parents, their rights as consumers and their relationships with pediatricians. The rise in opposition to vaccines by educated and affluent parents cannot be explained without taking into account how vaccines have been reinterpreted.
-C. We argue that interpretations, and interpretative consensus (social construction), can emerge through the process of diffusion. Drawing on two insights from research in cognition – that meaning inheres in cognitive associations between concepts, and that such perceived associations constrain people’s actions – we propose a theory wherein rather than beliefs or behaviors, the cultural elements being transmitted between individuals are perceptions about which beliefs or behaviors are compatible with one another. People learn from their social environments how to associate between different cultural practices, and in their own behaviors enact, and therefore reproduce for others, these associations.

-6. Sociophysics and Econophysics, the Future of Social Science. Can empirical data about human behavior make the "soft" sciences more like the "hard" ones. New interdisciplinary fields are voting yes. Enter the emerging fields of sociophysics and econophysics, which use the techniques and paradigms of physics and the natural sciences to examine questions of public opinion, decision making, and emotion. Though I can see the appeal of being able to replicate, make accurate predictions, I don’t believe it is possible – open systems, numerous but still finite variables interacting in exponential combinations, unfixed definitions, ineffables, having that much control over lives – and personally I’d prefer that the whole of soft social sciences not become or pretend to be a hard science. It is also self defeating if interdisciplinary fields are voting yes. The value of interdisciplinary studies are its differences, its inefficiencies. It cannot be called interdisciplinary if the different fields all use the same rigorous methods, have the same perspective, get the same results. That would be a mass production factory, where the parts are all interchangeable and will still create the exact same end product. Why can’t hard science be softer, that by becoming so be considered an improvement. Soft science already adopts hardness where appropriate, there are also times when it would behove hard science to consider its impacts on people, health, environment.
