-7.1. It’s the Climate Change, Stupid. As pundits pontificate on the theoretical notion of “electability”, scientists at Columbia University have provided a useful fact: According to a study of tree rings going back centuries, before humans recorded reliable data on precipitation, human generated greenhouse gases were effecting global drought conditions as early as 1900, Climate Change Has Contributed to Droughts since 1900 – and May Get Worse, Changing Climate May Affect Animal to Human Disease Transfer, Climate Change Has Made Droughts More Frequent Since 1900. The findings confirm what computer models had projected about the past, which bolsters what those models project for the future, including increasing drought “over large parts of North America” over the next several decades. | The Trump presidency is an emergency, but much of what it has done can ultimately be undone. What can’t be undone is the time and resources it has wasted by both ignoring climate change and making it worse. NASA Research Shows Humans Have Been Influencing Drought for over a Century. ¶ Climate Change Parallax, (CounterPunch). There exists a very seductive delusion that once we cool (or heat) the planet to the proper temperature that the majority of our ecological ills will be over. This is a dangerous self deception. Climate change per se is not the problem. Temperature fluctuations (increases) reflect underlying carnage caused to nature by excessive human activity. Once global warming has been defeated, and temperatures have been restored to normal levels, it will be clearly evident that nothing has been solved. Environmental deterioration will continue its ugly descent. Here is a small itemization of conditions that will not be addressed by a normal climate. Potential Surprises: Compound Extremes and Tipping Elements. Climate models do not include all of the processes that can contribute to feedbacks, compound extreme events, and abrupt and/or irreversible changes. The physical and socioeconomic impacts of compound extreme events (simultaneous heat and drought, wildfires, hot and dry conditions, flooding, high precipitation, snow, waterlogged ground) can be greater than the sum of the parts. The tendency of climate models to underestimate temperature change suggests that climate models are more likely to underestimate than to overestimate future change.

-7.2. Skeptic vs Denier. The difference between legitimate questions and outright ignoring of fact. Deniers: will cherry pick the evidence that supports their position; will make unreasonable or impossible demands for evidence, move the goalpost when evidence is presented, and refuse entire categories of legitimate scientific evidence; will magnify scientific disagreements; focuses on sowing doubt and confusion; will exploit ambiguity; will make personal attacks; will cast doubt; and when all else fails they will invoke a conspiracy theory. Being a denier is about behavior, not position or even necessarily your credentials. | Skeptic: will try to understand the scientific consensus; will deviate from the mainstream view with very good specific reasons grounded in logic and evidence; is open to any conclusion, going wherever the evidence and logic leads; will not rationalize away contradicting evidence; and is intellectually honest.

-9.1. The Falls of 1972: John B Calhoun and Urban Pessimism. “Fall, 1972. Scenes Include Last Survivors”. This is the text on the opening slate. What have we missed. For now, it’s enough to know we’ve arrived late in the game. This is not the event, but its aftermath. This is post apocalypse. We think we know what the post apocalyptic world will look like. We’ve seen it in the movies, read about it, and even played the video game. It’s a place where bands of ragged survivors roam over a defoliated wasteland, their engagements marked by the expression of terrible violence and unchecked sexual aggression. | For fiction, the post apocalypse is a theatre in which to explore humanity’s barely subdued inhumanity. Functionally, it acts as a counterfactual, a reminder of the fragility of order, of how much our society depends for its continued operation upon our willing and mutual consent. Here’s how things would be if we didn’t play by the rules. Because in the post apocalypse, nobody plays by the rules. Behaviour is as bad as it can be. The rules went away with the society they formed, everything now is pure id. Just the base instincts survive, and survival requires just the base instincts. Kill, steal, rape. This is how the world looks from the brain stem, this is the view from the cerebellum. Post apocalypse represents regression to pre history, of motivational surrender to the throbbing urgency of the lizard brain. There are alternative scenarios. One of the speculations of PDWN is that if there is (now it is possible when not if) a severe acceleration of biocalamities occurs that people will behave according to the fictional narratives because people expect that is that way it will be and will act accordingly.

-A. These are all behaviors that occur in parademic. So how is parademic qualitatively different from other disaster behavior that both exacerbates the problems and are altruistic help. In parademic social contagion is linked to the event and the behavior is an integral part of the cascading global biocalamity, and have the same qualities, slow, occult, dormancy, acceleration, deceleration, delayed impact, etc. This however still does not make parademic qualitatively different from other disasters.
-B. The difference is the framing. The behavior is analogous to other disasters but the motivational cause differs significantly. Biocalamities are existential threats via the processes of life: Respiration, Circulation, Thermal regulation, Decay, Waste elimination, Digestion, Absorption, Sensing, Cognition, Communication, Immunity, Reproduction, Motility, Energy storage, Cooperation, Parasitism, Recuperation, Metabolism. Panic, fear, altruism, grief, selfishness, etc, are expressed, but are significantly different when the very acts of living, doing what is necessary to live (eat, drink, move, breath, sex, talk, touch) are life threatening risks.
-190421-5>2. Four Lessons from a Century of Pandemics. The Spanish flu infected an estimated 500 million people worldwide, and killed tens of millions. A century later, we have vaccines, antibiotics, advanced life support, and high tech monitoring networks. And, yet, disease outbreaks continue to surprise even experts. here are four lessons we should have learned, but haven’t: 1) Biomedical advances are only part of the story: Don't be reassured by the fact that we have medical technologies that weren't available in 1918. 2) Think big picture: If you narrowly focus on the pathogen or the epidemiology of the disease and don't take sufficient time to understand the wider ecology – the interactions between people, microbes, and other animals – you really miss a chance to understand the complexities of these epidemics. That sounds like parademic. 3) Question what’s known: Anyone can fall into the trap of thinking that once we have a certain amount of knowledge, we really understand how things work. 4) Keep it in perspective: It's too easy to just blame the media for hyping something that turns out not to be as fearful as people thought. Stop the Presses. Newspapers Affect Us, Often in Ways We Don't Realize.

-181111-4‡B>7. <ADDED 181118>2. #Books Bill McKibben Has Been Sounding the Climate Alarm for Decades. Here’s His Best Advice. Climate change is clearly harder because no one made $1 trillion a year being a bigot. His latest book, Falter: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out [Cover], is a depressing vindication of his first one. Thirty years ago, he warned that human beings were altering the planet in such a way that we would imperil our own existence. Today “we are even deeper in the hole”. There is now no conceivable way to stop climate change; at best, it’s a battle to mitigate its impact — and we’re quickly running out of time. Even worse “because of the way power and wealth are currently distributed on our planet ... we’re uniquely ill prepared to cope with the emerging challenges”. Despite the gloomy tone, the book ends with an affirmation of the power of activism and nonviolent resistance, which, he insists, is our only way out of this mess. 190505-VCP-Pakistan -Canada -USA-A -2USA.
