-1. Revisiting the Role of the Science Journalist. In today’s ecosystem of online science publications, it can be hard to tell what qualifies as journalism and what doesn’t. Does it matter. -2↓. [Cartoon]. The last decade or so has seen a great blossoming of websites devoted to science and technology, to expand “science communication” and to improve scientists’ ability to share their thoughts and work directly with the public. Their essays are typically overseen by editors with years of journalistic experience. But is the work journalism. To some extent it is, but others disagreed. Important caveats and context are too often left out of such material. Of course, whether the general public makes any distinction between these modes of communication is an open question, but a recent study suggests that it matters greatly that they do. People who read a news story about a treatment that overemphasizes effectiveness, or omits limitations and risks, are more likely to consider that treatment beneficial than those who read a story free of spin.
-2. The following is a proration of a discussion within anthropology about its role in the biological sciences. Life/NonLife: A Forum, is the distinction between life and nonlife one that anthropology needs to discard. Life/NonLife Revived. Earthquakes. Taxidermy. Ghosts. Climate Change. These phenomena challenge the stability and salience of ‘life’ as an ethnographic category. With concern about the prospect of mass extinctions, emerging epidemics, fiscal crises and terrorist cells, what can ethnographic work of the ‘social’ do. The stories of people reckoning with lively and precarious landscapes, beset by biotic, geologic, supernatural and material agencies, gives a decidedly post human strain. Note that this is a news like paraphrase of the academic article -1↑, is it accurate, or does it sacrifice validity to be understandable. Life/Nonlife: A Response. The broad implications when asking: Should Anthropology abandon the distinction between Life and Nonlife. How far are we willing to go to destabilize a set of categories. Are we willing to risk the integrity of the discipline itself, founded as it was on understanding human society and culture. The question, what are the distinct social conditions that push this question into the forefront of academic discussions, shifts from asking what a discipline should be or do to asking what external forces are always inside the discipline and striating across it. Natural sciences are interested in whether the division of life/nonlife is true or false within the experimentally grounded sense of a better or worse explanatory framework for understanding the world.
-3. Climate Change Poses Greater Risk to Global Development than Climate Action Does. Climate action without careful planning and reform can be costly, but a new study shows that the benefits of global action on climate largely outweigh the hazards. There are approximately four times fewer trade offs than synergies between climate action and the targets of the UN's global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). No matter where you live or what you work with, climate change will directly or indirectly, impact your life. The analysis recommends that action is coupled with integrated planning and resource management. There are trade offs involved, but not taking action on climate will inflict damage on a much wider scale. [Meme]. On Climate Change: Do Something Right Now Before We Can’t Do Anything, Ever. -4.1. Multiple topics implies collaboration between multiple disciplines. Coaching Scientists to Play Well Together. When scientists from different disciplines collaborate – as is increasingly necessary to confront the complexity of challenging research problems – interpersonal tussles often arise. A free, online training tool, teamscience.net, has been proven to develop skills to work with other scientists outside their own discipline. Skills to play well together: 1) The ability to choose team members who have the right mix of expertise, temperament and accessibility to round out a team. 2) The ability to anticipate what could go wrong and to develop contingency plans in advance. 3) The ability to manage conflict within the team. -5. He Knew about Climate Change in 1799. What Can We Learn. #Book The Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt -2- [Cover] follows a prescient naturalist’s voyages in South America. Few people today remember Alexander von Humboldt, but the Prussian naturalist predicted climate change back in the early 19th century. He’s the forgotten father of environmentalism. During his travels through Venezuela in 1799, he noticed that farmers in the Aragua valley were deforesting the region to grow indigo. As a result, the nearby lake was drying up. Later, in a letter to President Thomas Jefferson dated June 1804, he wrote, “The wants and restless activity of large communities of men gradually despoil the face of the Earth”. It was one of the first Western observations of human caused climate change. Environmentalists and scientists like Charles Darwin, John Muir, and Henry David Thoreau were heavily influenced by his writings, which were widely read during his lifetime. -6. Doctors as Border Police: What Happened to ‘First, Do No Harm’. Building trust and acting in the patient’s best interests are guiding principles of medical practice. This is especially true when caring for vulnerable and marginalised people, such as undocumented migrants. While this area is in drought north of it is Bangladesh: Severe Flooding Puts More than 4 Million People at Risk of Food Insecurity and Disease, [Map]. | Drought and Climate Change Are Driving High Water Prices in the Murray-Darling Basin. Inevitably, whenever an important good becomes more expensive – be it housing, electricity or water – there is a rush to identify potential causes and culprits. In the past few years high water prices have been blamed on foreign investors, corporate speculators, state government water sharing rules, new almond plantings and the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. While some of these factors have had an effect on the market, they are in many ways a distraction from the simpler truth: that high water prices have mostly been caused by a lack of rain. There is also the consistent pattern that the problem was ignores and then solutions were chosen and while blaming other factors for political gain The Murray-Darling Basin Scandal: Economists Have Seen it Coming for Decades. Much of the supposed water savings are illusory. Much of the water wasted in irrigation systems is not lost to the environment. Most of the water leakage and seepage from irrigation channels eventually returns to rivers through groundwater systems. So saving this water through infrastructure efficiency doesn’t actually add anything more to environmental flows.
