-1. Introduction Objects of Critique in Critical Global Health Studies. As an emerging subfield of medical anthropology with roots in histories and geographies of colonial and international health, critical global health studies reflects both changing modes of health practice and the centering of critique as a core anthropological endeavor. -5. Shaping Opinions About Science and Medicine, responding to a commentary with all the usual anti science tropes. The alternative medicine industry has been remarkably successful in shaping public opinion about the nature and relationship of science and medicine. A half century ago much of what is now considered by the public to be a valid alternative, or something that should be “integrated” into mainstream medicine, was considered to be health fraud. Like any complex social phenomenon, some of this rebranding was deliberate and calculating, and some emerged spontaneously from the community. The result has been a set of specific misinformation about science and medicine that works together to undermine the scientific position and promote quackery as legitimate. Use of the false dichotomy is one method. The notion that mainstream medicine is too demanding and unreasonable when requiring scientific proof for treatments, while being hostile and dismissive of the possibilities of treatments outside the mainstream (for instance right to try unproven treatments). This is a powerful narrative, but it is all nonsense. It is, to be honest, partly a manifestation of the Dunning-Kruger* effect, where the author appears to be writing from the illusion of knowledge, while demonstrating they don’t actually understand how modern medicine operates. As is often the case, there is a small kernel of truth lurking deep within some points, but they are distorted beyond recognition to serve a narrative that has evolved to promote a brand. *Dunning-Kruger is usually applied to the person presenting themselves as an expert in an area they don’t actually have knowledge about. Dunning-Kruger can also be applied to receivers of the message. Receivers who accept information are deluding themselves that they can judge the expertise of someone (that is trust them) and the validity of the information. 190728-Polemic-5.3. -6.1. Misdirection in the Margins of Malaria Elimination Methods. This paper proposes the term misdirection as a process by which attention is diverted from certain scientific approaches in the malaria elimination paradigm to justify specific methodological, scientific and political decisions. Misdirection, as it applies in magic, creates a sort of tunnel vision in which attention is diverted away from any action occurring outside the frame of the current paradigm. A crucial component of this misdirection process is the global standardization of intervention methodologies operating independent of local social contexts and the perceived impossibility to ‘localize’ such interventions. This conviction requires – and is simultaneously supported by- the production of decontextualized evidence through the application of methodologies aiming at generalizability, in detriment of social context and variability. This process produces pseudo measurements and conclusions that are at the same time real in their adherence to paradigmatically valid methodologies and fake as they either remain empty of empirical significance or whose validity cannot be assessed as we have lost sight of the (local, social, cultural) variation it has decided to ignore. Using the example of research on the effectiveness of bed nets and topical repellents as malaria prevention tools and their expected use within the current paradigm of malaria elimination, we show how the inherent ambiguity of the pseudo allows consequent misdirection processes.
-6.2. Who Is the Fake One Now. Questions of Quackery, Worldliness and Legitimacy. This paper shows how in the past quackery was seen as a problem of remoteness and isolation while today it is global connects which provide the nourishing grounds for it. It looks at ‘Dr Elsie’ from rural Bushbuckridge, South Africa who uses a Quantum Resonance Magnetic Analysis Machine [Photo] as a diagnostic tool to prescribe Chinese supplements (probably TCM). The paper describes how the practicing ‘doctor’ draws approval and a sense of legitimate professionalism from the economic success of her newly established business. Here, pseudo medical business becomes a conduit for social aspirations while she places the ‘burden of proof’ about the legitimacy of what she does with the very same people who the technology she uses deceives (gaslighting). The paper is framed by how the author’s own sense of faithfulness as researcher is challenged by the difficulty to draw a clear line between authentic and pseudo health care. -180513-1.1↓.
-6.3. The Masking and Making of Fieldworkers and Data in Postcolonial Global Health Research Contexts. Common characterisations of fieldworkers as ‘low skilled’ and ‘local’ make them attractive to research institutions in two important ways – as community embedded data collectors thus facilitating community participation and as being unlikely to fabricate data because they lack the skills to avoid detection. This paper questions these assumptions. It draws the idea of the ‘scientific persona’ and concepts of mask making to explore how fieldworkers construct identities and data within their liminal roles. Fieldworkers create particular pseudo personae or masks for getting and staying employed. They dumb down CVs and emphasise their similarities with community members in ways which are partially ‘real’ but also ‘fake’. These constructed identities provide fieldworkers with a persona that allows them to fabricate or modify data without raising suspicions. They frequently engage in practices known as ‘genuine fake’ data fabrication which is data perceived as factually correct and verifiable yet methodologically incorrect, hence it is real and fake in varying degrees. We understand the ‘pseudo’ as the blurry space between real and fake where fieldworkers construct their identities and data. Given the laudable aims of Global Health, fieldworkers’ masking and making up data signal the need for greater attention by those designing its research, to better understand and address why and how these practices unfold.

-190721-5>1. Happy 200th Birthday to Eunice Foote, Hidden Climate Science Pioneer. American Eunice Foote was an amateur scientist from the mid-1800s whose experiments foreshadowed the discovery of Earth's greenhouse effect. In Foote’s time, geologists were discovering the world’s climate and vegetation had once been radically different. In the periods when coal deposits were forming in swampy seas, geologists concluded that the atmosphere had once had much higher levels of carbon dioxide. Foote correctly speculated that this would have made Earth much warmer. Foote’s remarkable insight about carbon dioxide and Earth’s past climate: “An atmosphere of that gas would give to our earth a high temperature; and if as some suppose, at one period of its history the air had mixed with it a larger proportion than at present, an increased temperature... must have necessarily resulted”. Her work was presented on August 23, 1856, at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) – not by her, but by a male colleague. -A. One science fiction story that uses fungal growth as the background setting of the adventure of the protagonist is The Mad Planet written in 1920. The dominance of fungi was massive amounts of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere – from geological sources not anthropogenic* – in a mass extinction event due to the lack of oxygen. Decendents of man still existed, but without oxygen to supply the brain, the intellectual qualities associated with homo sapiens were no more. Not exactly a prediction of environmental change as now occurring 100 years after its publication, but perhaps an indication that back then there may have been a recognition that something was happening, that it was being ignored, and what may result.
-Quote: Just when men were congratulating themselves that the Golden Age had come again, it was observed that the planet seemed ill at ease. Fissures opened slowly in the crust, and carbonic acid gas – the carbon dioxide of chemists – began to pour out into the atmosphere. That gas had long been known to be present in the air, and was considered necessary to plant life. Most of the plants of the world took the gas and absorbed its carbon into themselves, releasing the oxygen for use again. Scientists had calculated that a great deal of the earth's increased fertility was due to the larger quantities of *carbon dioxide released by the activities of man in burning his coal and petroleum. Because of those views, for some years no great alarm was caused by the continuous exhalation from the world's interior.

-190519-6>6. <ADDED 190623>5. Pop Cultural Mobilization: Deploying Game of Thrones to Shift US Climate Change Politics. Over the last two decades, scholars have developed an increasingly sophisticated range of approaches to studying the complex relationship between popular culture and politics. There are three major weakness in this expanding body of research: (1) the analytic focus on the pop cultural artifact itself rather than political actors and scholars doing the causal political or pedagogical work, (2) a lack of attention to the question whether different culture consumers’ interpretations and experiences of a pop cultural artifact match those of scholars, and (3) the dearth of empirical studies verifying theoretical claims. These weaknesses can be addressed with the concept of pop cultural mobilization to capture the active and deliberate appropriation of pop cultural resources for a specific political purpose by political actors. Game of Thrones (GOT) is a case study of political commentaries that purposefully contributed to a process of meaning making by publishing their own interpretations of the TV show, especially what they perceived as strong parallels between the GOT narratives and climate change politics in the real world. This demonstrates the interpretive openness of the pop cultural artifact GOT, challenging the assumed interpretive authority of scholars’ readings of a cultural narrative -180513-1.1↓, 190728-Polemic-3.2. The Ebola Response Anthropology Platform includes the different ways in which people responded in Guinea and Sierra Leone. As the epidemic spread in Guinea, acts of violence or everyday resistance to outbreak control measures repeatedly followed, undermining public health attempts to contain the crisis. In Sierra Leone, defiant resistance was rarer. This fits with the PDWN Database where Sierra Leone had outbreaks after a brief downturn from government lockdowns to locate the sick, indicating a passive resistence of hiding the sick and dead, with more skill over time. It is possible that this included an emergent treatment systems that likewise improved over time. It is not unusual with the official system is not meeting local needs an emergent system will manifest, normally from precursors turns to that purpose. The interpretation that this local covert system was more effective than the official one is suspect, but very likely that there was such a system that did have greater success over time as it learned from the official one.
