CV Pandemic Daily Notes 200322
CV1*. Like many other people the PDWN curator is now in shelter in place mode, having to come to grips with the higher possibility that I may not live through this, or worse that those who I love may not survive. *POST COLLECTIO: At this time CV# only indicates a stub number and not specific topics as will be started later.
-A. Part of this process is changing PDWN to be more immediate and current, more readable, shorter, with fewer ideas is to do a (nearly) daily Parademic Daily Notes.
-B. Paradoxically PDN will likely have more errors and omissions due to adopting the qualities of “good” writing. Unfortunately, it will be more difficult to identify errors and humor in short simple clear sentences that appear to be perfect. Why give thought to something that seems to answer all questions, is easily understood, appears complete, and has no clues it may be woefully wrong.
CV2. Format and content will be a living process for awhile, but the redesign will continue to have humor.
-A. Humor will be limited to education, coping, stress relief, expressing anger =2=, and deeper insights about events. Humor is intended not to be taken literally or seriously. Unlike jokes humor is intended as something to think about. [Meme].
-B. Unlike the previous PDWN practice, humor in PDN will have clear indications it is humor. This is not the time to try to give people practice at critical thinking and spotting erroneous information in a mass of information as is being currently experienced in a real world pandemic.
CV3. What is likely to be valid information to help with maintaining safety will be included. If something is learned to be wrong or was misinterpreted, PDN will follow up. Be aware that it may not be possible to correct misinterpretations and applications, hopefully before these cause harm. Basic Protective Measures Against the New Coronavirus, [Flyer]. Pandemic Planning, Think Strategically.
-A. Mis and disinformation will no longer be included as part of PDN except as an alert that an item of information in circulation is potentially dangerous*. Now is not the time to practice learning critical thinking and other cognitive skills to spot what is false innocently shared or made to appear true that is maliciously shared. *POST COLLECTIO: There was erroneous information before CV, but it developed that not only was there an increase but contributed significantly to parademic negative behaviors. Was overly optimistic that an immanent biothreat would curtail an infordemic.
-B. Learn as fast as possible that what you know to be absolutely true can kill you and others. Do this preferably before that happens.
-C. If you are religious and having to choose between safety and your faith, trust that God will understand and forgive that you put the safety of your family, your community (to include the sinners) and yourself as having priority over worship. <Cont 200322-200112-2¶>3↓. POST COLLECTIO: This curator has been reluctant to address religion as a stand alone topic, and therefore easily found by search engines. This is in part from fear of online attacks from all types of zealots, and in part because I have studied a religion before as part of my graduate studies I know its something I am unable to comprehend, it being to foreign to me. Maybe someday I will be able to write about its multiple roles in parademic.
-D. A priori beliefs have likely not been tested under conditions of a pandemic and may turn out to be absolutely worstg assumptions to follow in that context.
-F. This applies to scientists and anyone else who believes themselves an expert due to previous education, experience, or dumb luck that they have been “successful” because things worked out. [Meme].
CV4. PDN will try not to do too much Cassandra bitching, but it’s likely that will be a theme. 210103-1A. POST COLLECTIO: Was very wrong about this. Bitching in this stub is not gender related.
-A. It's great that people are now talking with each other about what to do in a pandemic, but why didn't this happen before the pandemic happened. If discussions and informed actions had been done years ago, even a few weeks before, we would not be in this situation we find ourselves in now. Even so there are a number of people who do not realize how potentially dire things are right now, and others still claiming that we are prepared and in control.
-B. Blame for previous and current stupidity at this and any time is worthless and a distraction from what is important now. Deal with what the actual situation as it is now. Do what is truly important now, not later. Reevaluate everything you believe is important. If you feel compelled to lay blame make sure to include yourself and keep a list for post CV agendas. POST COLLECTIO: Blame ended up being a significant negative parademic behavior that hindered action and allowed CV to continue as a pandemic.
-C. What was important in the past is likely unimportant in a pandemic. If something was important before, and survives the crucible of what is important now, then it might actually be something that is truly worth keeping, or an example of stubbornness beyond reason. Inversely what was unimportant before a pandemic becomes important. POST COLLECTIO: See Toilet Paper and other shortages.
-CV5. Communicate, listen, communicate, listen, communicate, listen.
-A. If you think you are an excellent communicator you are likely wrong. It does not matter how true, factual, and well constructed your communication is. The critical part of communication is not the message but what the receiver interprets as being the message, and their decision if they will accept it or not. In a PANdemIC people are more likely to misconstrue*B what you intended to communicate. Let them communicate back while you listen if what they say is close enough to what you meant.
-*B. Had miscontrued before in earlier posted version. That was not a mistake. Read as mis+conned+true. Such subtleties are for making teaching points for medical situation analysts, but teaching about parademic is not best done during an accelerating pandemic.
-CV6. POST COLLECTIO: Obviously this is when it became clear that CV was going to become a global pandemic, one that would affect, effect (and possibly infect) my own life directly. I have already made plans for 2020 to be my last year as patterns of parademic behavior were fairly clear and consistent. It was an unfortunate serendipity that I had an accelerated global biocalamity (albeit a low intensity one) to finish with.
*****
-1. Though overly simplistic, easily misinterpreted and reaching invalid conclusions that will influence behaviors, the binary heuristic model of Cooperation - Competition is valuable during parademics. Simply put survival balancing the two on a global scale. Competition for protective masks and other PPE should be for health care personnel, who already risk exposure, before panicked people who are not yet at risk, Despite Repeated Calls to Replenish Supplies, a Shortage Exists of Specialized Masks to Protect Medical Personnel Listicle. Trump Orders Manufacturers to Drastically Ramp up Production of Hospital Gift Shop Supplies CV02 =2=. 200329-3.1B.
-A. It will be awhile for global cooperation will supersede self interest competition – nationalism, government, ideological, xenophobic and business – is better served with cooperation based on self interest. In the current accelerated biocalamity context much of what has gone wrong – spread, shortages =2=, panics, decisions that delay actions when they would have been effective, work from home, misinformation, price gouging – are attributable to competition between those who feel safe from biocalamity and want to still be competitive after it is over, rather than cooperation which is interpreted as a weakness and potential loss of competitive edges, having to work from a position of weakness and trust in those that have reason not to trust those who have screwed them over before. If those who have been exploited for years to the benefit of others, but did not recognize it or could not do anything about it, may find that their survival depends on a different form of cooperation in the changed circumstances that creates the necessity of changing the status quo of parasitic relations that have not become harmful. 200729-CV03.

[Tweet]. We Were Warned$.
-A. DisasterDoc is a blog site that was a good source of parademic observations until it stopped in 2017. Blog Reactivated for Covid-19. I have been following Covid-19 closely since early January, and unfortunately, have predicted almost every thing that has occurred so far. It’s not that I’m brilliant. It’s just that I’m a scientist and physician with a pretty good understanding of pandemic and epidemiology (notice that someone who is both an expert and experienced does not claim omnipotence). Covid-19 has basically been a textbook example of pandemic and parademic. Blog Rules of Engagement Covid-19. We Are At War, good points about the level commitment needed, but there are drawbacks using warfare terminology for fighting disease =2= =3= =4=ldi =5= =6= =7= =8=, Transparency and Testing Work Better Than Coercion in Coronavirus Battle.
-B. POST COLLECTIO: This reactivation ended the same month it restarted. Don’t know why but one possibility is that seeing a repeat of what was noted before, with even more grievous mistakes being made, was simply too much especially if she became the target of CV Protestors. It is also possible as a retired physician she directed her efforts to providing medical care. Out of curiosity I contacted the Disaster.Doc to find out why they did not blog further. Turns out that she was not threatened or overworked as happened to other health care professionals in the following months. She stopped because no one in that area of Oregon seem interested in implementing existing plans that would have slowed spread, not in having her assistance, either not seeing it as needed or not wanting to cause panic. What was reported as people quitting may only be the start of a cascade of more loss of trust, lost relations, lost planning, than will have repercussions long after CV ends or becomes endemic. I can relate to this as I was not able to start reviewing those notes for two months and it took longer to be consistent. 200414-CV22.
-C. From a parademic perspective much of what will happen are foreseeable because they have happened in previous accelerations of biocalamities, making Covid19 a natural experiment to see if previous observations are repeated. In fact the list of tags above list several behaviors that are constantly reoccurring. Cyber Attack Hits U.S. Health Agency Amid Covid-19 Outbreak, Barr: FBI Probing If Foreign Gov’t Behind HHS Cyber Incident, the attack was predictable, but not when or where. HHS during a pandemic is an obvious target. HHS is at high risk due to gubergenic vulnerabilities. Other gubergenic actors have previously and are still willing and capable of exploiting vulnerabilities. From the perspective of some actors exploiting vulnerabilities to exacerbate an already stressed competitor, that now has the addition of a bioagent spreading in that society, is a way to exacerbate the impacts of a natural event into a bioweapon <CONT 200315-200112-2¶>5A. It is however possible, and there are existent groups in the US that have the capability and desire (and have used physical violence before), but at this time PDWN does not observe sufficient pre conditions and circumstances >1↓ that make that a likely probability*F. One of the factors that makes physical attacks a low probability is the perception that goals can be reached with minimum destruction, but if it is perceived that legal channels are no longer skewed in their favor that could quickly change. -3. Another behavior in parademic is not outside of normal behavior, but the persistence of behavior as if things were still normal. Despite Dire Coronavirus Warning, Some Refuse to Give up Their Routines$. The belief that this is lax attitude or denial is superficial. Like most things parademic it is more complex than that, with complications. To touch on a few of these: 1) One aspect is that it takes time to absorb novel information that is outside previous experience and understanding; 2) It’s hard to stop ingrained habits that are done unconsciously, like touching one’s face; 3) There is also an aspect that when there is grief and loss routines are comforting, and anything that is a return to normalcy is very attractive; 4) When there are conditions of uncertainty there is a tendency toward magical behaviors$ to give a sense of control, doing something risky is reassuring, or at least a final act of defiance, [Cartoon]. 5) It is hard to comprehend that something that can’t even be seen can kill millions, intuitively (the gut feeling) big events have big causes =2= =3=; and last (though likely there are several more), there is anger about not being able to do as one wants, to be irritated by minor inconveniences, feeling put upon by an uncaring world.

-C. With digital media it is common that a headline will change, and/or an article will be updated. This is a weakness of the Digital Ethnography methodology. An illustrative article may either disappear – though usually can be found again by searching the source website or goggle – or are changed from what PDWN originally posted. Sometimes the article is intentionally removed to obfuscate. -F. One of the weaknesses to Digital Ethnography is that electronic media is the main source of information. Currently the information firehose is going up concerning topics of parademic interest B‡↑. PDWN’s ability to do collection has dropped to where I am now only averaging 25% of the websites I normally check each day, though with 10 years of experience I may be more efficient and knowing where to go for the most data for least effort – but the longer the biocalamity and parademic last this flow will begin to fall off, especially what is not CV, though a global and or nuclear/bio war would replace CV in the news cycle, and the 2020 election will still be of interest. Fortunately, PDWN already has 10 years of collected data and from what has been collected so far, the patterns of behavior remain the same with this biocalamity. The curator may actually have the time to write decent material that is more story like. Likely that as legitimate news sources that provide validated information, have attrition from illness, death, closure of companies and layoffs, mis and disinformation will fill the void. Then again, with more journalists not having to meet deadlines and write what others want, there may be a counter to that, possibly backed up by faster consequences of reality on behaviors based on GIGO*G – Except for medical scams =2=, the loss of income sources that hit trustworthy journalism may also neuter those sources that thrive on misinformation, fear mongering, assuring their echo chambers that they are still right (no matter how many how many of them die). Google to Limit Federal Access to Location Data as it Fights Coronavirus, the story slant is that Google is being unreasonable, the reality is probably more about the concern how such data will be used by a level of government who have a proclivity for incompetence, using information for other agendas like anti immigration, and making policy decisions based on misinterpretation or regardless of evidence.
