-1. One of the puzzles of parademics is why do people stop control and containment too soon, and after the biocrisis don’t maintain adequate preparation, surge capacity, much less do proper maintenance and replenishment of stocks. Over time public health and medical surveillance to prevent and minimize the next pandemic, biocalamity, parademic, biocrisis, erodes away. Repeated observation of this consistent behavior indicates that people are satisfied with the situation and are more than willing to go on to something more interesting and gratifying. Then there are economic incentives to stop, that what was done is good enough and would not happen again or for a long time – low probability, high damage event. Being prepared for the inevitable, but unknown for when, where or what, is taking money away from more important priorities of now, such as lowering taxes. There is the bradyoccult (slow motion disaster) factor, Coronavirus: Pathogen Could Have Been Spreading in Humans for Years, where a hazard is not identified until it accelerates, but in the trough between waves – some for just a few days, others lasting years) it does not seem to be worth the effort and expenditure (until it isn’t). Satisfaction may be why lessons learned are unlearned, and some critical medical specialties are in decline. 200417-CV28. 200723-CV01D.
-2. Linguistic Relativism. The words used for and with CV indicate beliefs and likely behavior in the context of CV. Wuhan or Chinese virus strongly indicate conspiracy theory =2= =3= =4= as a bioweapon, a particularly politicized narrative*A, moral panic*A, disinformation, changing narratives and othering*A, Federal Authorities Warn of an Increase in Asian American Hate Crimes Video. Wuhan may also indicate that one has not seen any reporting of CV since the initial media reporting and have not updated terminology, maybe going into total shelter mode
early on, or are aboard a submarine. Covid-19 is the term form the CV pandemic while SARS-COV-19 is the pathogenic agent, but many use Covid-19 to means both. For parademic purposes CV is used for the simple reason that other terms are misleading, value laden, and frankly spelling Coronavirus or other terms out completely is time consuming and awkward. This is known as Zipfs Law the tendency to shorten frequently used words.
-*A. The Social Distancing Culture War Has Begun =2= =3= =4=, across the country, social distancing is morphing from a public health to political act. The consequences could be disastrous. To repeat again Trumpenceism (scroll down to rosa) is not the cause of biocalamities. It however has: Decreased capabilities and ability to weather catastrophes; Destroyed unity and cooperation; Ignored expertise that would have prevented and mitigated the acceleration; Increased the practice of gubergenic(cide); Exacerbated biocrisis to greater severity with more and longer consequences, and increased the probability of bioevents well beyond its term in office. In Virus Times, Have Americans Found a Shared Experience, and finding common ground may overcome schisms, even if the experiences are relative. 200913-CV10.
-B. Relativism is not completely incompatible with linguistic universals. There are some nearly universal cross cultural concepts, and biological limitations to produce language, but not all concepts are universal among cultures, and not all biological capabilities for language are used universally. Relativism is an antonym of Linguistic Determinism, the idea that words absolutely determine behavior and limits cognition. There are examples where under certain conditions a word will dictate an individual’s or group behavior, and indicates precise shared mental templates, these are by no means always the case.
-C. Referring to CV as a mild flu (#5) =2= or the common cold indicates misinformation, believing unreliable sources, Dunning-Kruger =2= =3= =4=, misrepresentation of information and statistics$, and frankly is dangerous, No, Coronavirus Isn't 'Just Like The Flu'. Here Are The Very Important Differences. True* that those with underlying conditions are more likely to die, but not always. True that most cases so far are mild, but again the pattern of who gets severe cases is undetermined. True that most deaths among the elderly and those with underlying conditions**, but that was the first wave. We are now entering a second wave where other age groups will be impacted. What Does it Feel like to Have Coronavirus, like most diseases CV has general symptoms similar to other respiratory infections (cold, flu). For a percentage of those people, who likely were exposed to someone who only had a mild case or no symptoms, the disease progresses to a bad flu; then to something much worse than flu; then you think you are going to die; then you hope you will die =2= =3= =4=https://csupalliativecare.org/palliative-care-and-covid-19/. If you survive – for severe cases that means having had access to a ventilator =2= =3= =4= =5= =6=, 200329-35A, 9B↓ 200410-CV19, 200819-CV28.1, one may end up having long term chronic conditions. [Cartoon]. As Trump Lets Private Sector Supply the Coronavirus Fight, the Well Connected Often Get First Dibs =2= [Listicle] – there is a long period of recuperation, possibly without family if they were also infected with severe cases, and your immune system is so weakened, you can be easily reinfected and will be vulnerable to some other pathogen that is usually considered mild. Rural Broadband in the Time of Coronavirus =2=, millions of Americans lack the broadband access necessary for a video medical consult. ¿Coffins of Coronavirus Victims?.
-*. In parademic true ≠ validated fact. True is likely credible to what is assumed to be fact, and refers to belief in information (which can be valid or not), and behavior that is consistent with that belief. Both true and fact are subject to change over time with more information and evolution of narratives.
-**. Stupidity and Dunning-Kruger are pre existing conditions, but only in the context of social contagions, which can be concurrent with medical contagions. -3. Food is a biological need. Elaboration of food preparation and consumption is a universal social activity, Food and Eating: An Anthropological Perspective =2= =3= =4=, [Cartoon]. It is no surprise that food is both a cause of parademic (famine, shortages, adulteration, terrorism, contamination, agricultural diseases, pests), and a parademic behavior. -B. Santa Rosa Police Officer Dies from Coronavirus; First Death in Napa County CV12. Though a sad announcement and concerning that a young healthy person died, that is not the parademic interest. Keeping an accurate count of deaths from a biocalamity is very very complex, complicated by multiple factors, and likely to be inaccurate – look at the death count problems encountered with Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria =2= (MORE: Trump Administration Announces Nearly $13 Billion in Aid for Puerto Rico), Americans Are Almost Certainly Dying of Covid-19 but Being Left out of the Official Count =2=. Statistics are indicators, not exact reflections of a situation, especially in real time. This death stat will count as a CV death in one county, but the exposure was most likely to have been from the county the officer worked at. This is not intentional cover up but a standardized convention to increase validity and standardization of information, if one understands statistic. If one county had a policy to not count a death that was probably transported in, and another county counts a death based on being employed, but without proof that was where the exposure happened, and then repeat the inconsistent reporting N x’s, the utility of the statistics would quickly become useless. Most people, including officials (and that includes PH ones) and journalists don’t understand statistics well enough to know how to interpret and what cannot be interpreted from them*C.
-*C. For full disclosure the curator of PDWN is not a statistician. I took introductory statistics three times because in was a requirement to graduate. I only passed because the professor could not bear to see me again. What I do have some expertise in is disinformation, and how statistics can be manipulated to mislead to the wrong conclusions. -D. Why There's No National Lockdown$, Trump Resists Pressure to Declare Nationwide Stay at Home Order. This order will be made*B, but even if it had been done earlier when first recommended, it was too late to be effective to slow down spread. All that can be done now is mitigation to flatten the curve 201111-CV18.1, and the longer the delay the worse the worse the economic, mortality and morbidity consequences [Cartoon]. The irony is that political agendas are likely the reason for the resistance to social distancing, by the same HWSNBN*A 200327-CV12 who fear mongered for political reasons, by advocating stopping all flights =2= to and from Africa – and now US but not knowing where these will be – and not allowing health care workers to come back during a disease outbreak that has a low R0 and not an airborne pathogen, while hesitating to do the same for a pathogen that it contagious and airborne. -7. A Pandemic Expert Tells Us Why She Was So Wrong about Coronavirus, the parademic interest is not that the interpretation was biased by unidentified/ unexamined assumptions – I assumed that the US system would be a little bit better ... and I couldn't have been more wrong – but that this demonstrated a real expert by their admitting error and examining why.

-8. Due to having to go from stubs to the more time consuming of writing something more readable, responding to Requests for Information, and as CV accelerates open source information (that potentially will decelerate as news sources collapse) I have less time to find articles. One excellent source of parademic information in listicle form is the KHN Morning Briefing, but I have not been able to look through for the last two weeks. Suggest that for those interested to search this site every day, usually not posting on weekends. Friday, April 3. Friday, April 2. Wednesday, April 1. Tuesday, March 31. Monday, March 30. Friday, March 27. Thursday, March 26. Wednesday, March 25. Tuesday, March 24. Monday, March 23n . KFF Daily Global Health Policy Report is also a useful source. The advantage of these that as listicles they are a concentration of related articles with little effort. The downside for PDWN current purposes is validation and invalidation of forecasts and concepts of parademic; collect enough to establish a trend pattern (the exposition) but not following it to denouement or dormancy and the sequel (in pandemics these are called waves or next outbreak) [Chart]; and immediately applicable information. These are collections of current events that follow the news cycle =2= story arc whether or not that is the best collection, analysis and synthesis of parademic data [Cartoon].
-9. Rumor is to be expected during CV. Overly zealous interpretation of HIPAA*C, that one cannot say anything related to a patient, has the unintended consequence of exacerbating rumors and making rumor more difficult to contain and control =2=. Limited Waiver of HIPAA Sanctions and Penalties During a Nationwide Public Health Emergency will partly quell rumor before they become accepted information but will do nothing about conspiracy theory that are already embedded and impervious to evidence. HHS Eases HIPAA Enforcement on Data Releases During Covid-19. [Cartoon]. 200906-CV33.
-A. As HHS Responds to Coronavirus, Network Targeted by Cyberattack, a campaign spread by text, email, and social media, warning that there would be an order for mandatory two week quarantine across the country 200928-CV23, this False Claim: Children in the UK with Coronavirus Will Be Taken to Hospital Alone, maybe a spin off from the anxiety caused by the US policy of separating and incarcerating migrant children from their parents =2= spilling into other worries. Is White House Invoking the Stafford Act to Impose a Quarantine and Mobilize the National Guard =2=, No, the Military Doesn’t Have Covid-19 Quarantine Team Humvees in Michigan. If this was disinformation, and not a rumor spawned by the information vacuum created by HIPPA, it was well timed. This was circulated when there was no popular support or political will to order such an action. Now when such an action may be necessary and supported it is likely to be hindered by the earlier fear mongering.
-B. Being loose with fact has the tendency of cascading into full blown conspiracy which cascades further into difficulty discerning what is fact. Reporter Was Right: Trump Did Question Governors’ Ventilator Requests 200329-3.5A, -2C↑, 200819-28.1. Which lead to Conservative Amateur Sleuths Deny New York Hospital Crisis. -C. POST COLLECTIO: As requests for information were refused due to HIPAA, there is a potential pattern that the denials were in some cases to prevent there being accurate data being collected.
-10. Though apparently the pandemic preparation that was done was only window dressing (not quite the adaptive planning it was claimed to be), there is time to do a better job at recovery preparation and planning, that is if interdisciplinary experts and open communications are involved to inform policy decisions. A Framework for National Recovery from Covid-19 =2= =3=. There's a path forward drawing on lessons from the 2009 stimulus coupled with the Australian approach to Coronavirus. Besides with all the free time one involuntarily has 200402-CV19, not being pushed to do what is important to the “boss”, people have the time to think about what to do after this. At the very least how to mitigate being at the mercy of jobs that give no economic buffer if there is a disaster.
-10.1. Preparedness Spending Exploded After 9/11. Is That Helping Now. The U.S. invested billions in public health infrastructure and preparedness after 9/11. Is that helping with Covid-19. The PDWN opinion – and opinion is not fact, despite pundits and pscyophants who apparently believe that – the answer is ¡NO!. The focus on terrorism was one of the reasons that the response to Katrina was so inept. Resources and personnel were diverted from Public Health, Food Safety, Infectious Disease, Environmental Health, Etc, to focus on bioterrorism at the expense that the more frequent, escalating, and lethal natural bioevents. These have been ignored so long that the US and Global Health are unable to handle CV, despite previous pandemics and ecological disasters that should have been indications the framing was completely wrong. Public Health and Medicine did benefit with economic largess assuming one could justify grant funding in the guise of terrorism and consequence management. The creation of an ad hoc franken organization ended up creating more vulnerabilities and solved few to none of the problems it was intended to fix, i.e. the solution became more problems, if not a direct threat to the society it was intended to secure. The misdirection of efforts to the wrong problem has created opportunities to continue ill informed policies, defunded projects and research that would have been helpful, and set up a group think that neutralized critical thinking and evaluation.
-11. The Pandemic Is Turning the Natural World Upside Down$. Widespread social distancing measures have produced some jarring effects across land, air, and sea. The pandemic has unwittingly produced some large scale inconspicuous effects. The surreal slowdown of life as we know it has presented researchers with a rare opportunity to study the modern world under some truly bizarre conditions, and they’re scrambling to collect as much data as they can. -A. POST COLLECTIO: Seasonal illnesses, such a flu, have a strong correlation with weather conditions. This includes temperature, rapid fluctuations, moisture content, wind, pollution, sunlight, social interactions, and large gathering to enjoy the good weather. Neither weather and/or climate =2= cause disease, but diseases do thrive or wane under certain conditions. Atmospheric conditions can foster environmental conditions that can be favorable to pathogens, and the social behaviors that increase the possibility in spread.
