PDN Introduction, Glossary
CV1. Safety, Security: Police, Fire and Coping with Sick Leave amid Coronavirus Response.
The strategies included: the closing of the fire stations to the public; and the increased cleaning of fire stations and apparatus including the use of atomization guns from school custodians for sterilization.
CV2. Humor: Anxiety abreaction =2=. Boston Market CEO Forgoes Annual 2 Million Gallon Gravy Bonus to Help Pay Unemployed Workers, expressing the concerns about the wealth gap and unemployment. Man Reaches First of Dozens of Breaking Points to Come, 210103-3C. Worry that there will ever be a vaccine protection (antivax) and prevent future outbreaks. Shortages =2= =3= =4=, Reopening too soon =2= (Georgia), Coping, Recession =2= =3=, Stimulus.
-A. The Science of Humor Is No Laughing Matter =2= CV30.
CV3. Information: A Darwinian Moment: The Coronavirus Is Blowing Up the Media Landscape. Not only is the loss of multiple independent free (if not always accurate) press a cause for concern CV16, but PDN depends on open source information to monitor trends and identify beliefs with parademic implications. Have already noted that as the election media becomes more effective at controlling misinformation and conspiracy theory, this is affecting the ability to access these beliefs, while the sources for disinformation and social manipulation are getting better at security and keeping outsiders out of their echo chambers CV01. Society may end up with better and more accurate news, but at the cost of alternative facts, the indicators of social disruption and contagion, making it bradyoccult until too late. There is the possibility that there will be normalization of deviance =2= =3= CV01 CV09↓, that will suppress important news, controlled by a minority with vested interests. Researchers Want Social Media Companies to Preserve Coronavirus Misinformation Data CV30. Speculative Journalism Can Help Us Prepare for What’s to Come. Can it Also Promote Misinformation CV03 CV18.
CV4. Politics: Trump Versus the States: What Federalism Means for the Coronavirus Response. When I worked for the Feds (Federal government employee) one of the major obstacles to overcome was being a Fed. Being distrusted because of the reputation of coming in, taking over, screwing up the local situation. That opinion was all along the political spectrum. The only reason for being tolerated – to my chagrin as I thought I had great people skills and cultural competence CV12 – was that I represented money, access to resources, valid information, competence and networks =2=. Currently, very little of that achieved clout remains, and ascribed power is diminished (to included being elected or assigned to a position). What little still works is based on prior relationships CV12 where trust was developed beyond the federal silos, law, a big checkbook, and some capability to keep Big Fed and the disruptions of the CV Task Force =2= =3= =4= =5= =6= =7= away, 200416-CV28.
CV5. Economics: Preparation, Quick Actions Aid Germany, S Korea Virus Fight. The country with Europe’s largest economy was derided by many economists for years for insisting on a balanced budget and maintaining a health care system seen as bloated and expensive. But with those tools, Germany found itself well equipped to weather the outbreak, unlike Italy or Spain. Chancellor Angela Merkel has pointed to South Korea as an example of how to get ahead by vigilantly testing and tracking cases.
CV6. Language: More Words to Describe a World Gone Nuts: Firenado, Ecoanxiety, Covidiots
CV7. Emergence, Unofficial, Informal: Adding a Nylon Stocking Layer Could Boost Protection from Cloth Masks. Scientists who tested a variety of cloth face masks found that a nylon overlay significantly boosted how well they work. Researchers not involved in the study praised the finding.
-A. How Do You Do Contact Tracing. Poor Countries Have Plenty of Advice. As parts of the U.S. aim to move out of lockdown, a key tool to contain Coronavirus cases will be contact tracing. It's something health workers in low income countries have lots of experience with. But will the US accept expertise, advice, experience and information form s****ole countries. MORE: States Start Hiring Battalions of Contact Tracers to Track Covid-19, why the delay, should have been started in March.
-B. POST COLLECTIO: Eventually contact tracing probed ineffective in developed countries. People denied exposure or being ill, probably due to loss of social status. This includes health care providers.
CV8. Entertainment: A Teeming, Violent Pre Pandemic World in ‘Extraction’. There has been CV marketing CV0 before, but first I’ve seen for a movie framing the past for what the future may be like.
-A. It’s a Good Time to Run a Hobbyist Magazine. Health, food, and home and garden titles, among others, have seen an abundance of readers and social media engagement since stay at home and shelter in place orders swept across the country during the past month. CV9.
-B. Porn Is Free During Coronavirus and Right Wingers Are Losing Their Minds over It, How the Pandemic Is Changing Pornography, What the Coronavirus Has Done to the Porn Industry – So Far, Why Porn Stars Are in a Better Spot than Hollywood Actors amid Coronavirus Shutdowns, While Florida Searches for Coronavirus Porn, Adult Industry Feels the Pain, Sex and the Locked Down City: Intimacy in the Age of Coronavirus, The Rise of Video Conferencing Quarantine Porn, Porn Use Is Up, Thanks to the Pandemic.
-C. Porn, A Reflection of Our Culture, Pornography as Work Culture and Cultural Phenomenon, Pornography and Cultural Studies, The Growth of Internet Porn Tells Us More about Ourselves than Technology, The World Is Addicted to Pandemic Porn. Porn certainly overlaps with CV01 02 04 05 07 09 12 17 18 19 21 22 24, so it may be an informative and fruitful area of research CV30 200729-CV12.
-D. Health Departments Are Concerned about Spikes in STIs While Attention Is on Covid-19, HIV and other STD’s may go down during social distancing 200911-CV21, or may be going up due to less testing 201207-CV21, and there is a likelihood of a big jump in the numbers when CV goes dormant. Maybe, extreme moralists *E will oppose a CV vaccine because it will promote promiscuity.
-*E. POST COLLECTIO: There were antivax moral panics Search CV19↓ – another consistent characteristic of parademic about a disease or framing something as a disease – about aborted fetal cells, changing DNA, infertility CV05, abortion these are all Search terms and more.
CV9. Arts, Creativity: Normal: How the Nazis Normalized the Unspeakable. CV03↑.
CV10. Spirituality, Philosophy: Pakistan Calls off Limits on Mosque Attendance in Time for Ramadan, Pakistan Limits Worshippers at Mosques. Many Worshippers Are Defiant, similar to behavior in the US 200332-CV17. Ramadan Begins. 200420-CV10.
-A. MORE: Coronavirus Upends Ramadan Celebrations and Traditions. Muslims Around the World Face a Different Kind of Ramadan. Ramadan, a Month about Community for Many Muslims, Goes Virtual.
CV14. Uncategorized, Miscellaneous: Infrastructure The Coronavirus Pandemic Might Make Buildings Sick =2=. This should have been in CV19.
CV15. Grief: World's Playgrounds Silent, Lonely amid Pandemic. This global photo gallery captures a sad reality in the time of the pandemic: Instead of joyful peals of laughter from children, one hears only the chirping of birds, or perhaps a lone car rumbling past on the street, as playgrounds across the world have fallen silent. Cause for grief now, but what if post CV there are few children to play. [Photo =2= =3=]. CV16 CV17.
CV16. Consequences, Social Change: Disinformation campaigns probably did not anticipate the unintended consequence that it would bite back economically, Russians Withdrew $13.6 Billion from ATMs Amidst Coronavirus Fears CV02 based on factual news, While Americans Hoarded Toilet Paper, Hand Sanitizer* and Masks, Russians Withdrew $13.6B in Cash from ATMS. *201231-CV05.1.
CV22. Longue Duree: The World Has Seen Protests Against Epidemic Lockdowns Before. These Are Different. Good article but “different” implies not predicted. Fear mongering and moral panics CV7E↑ have been harnessed before to further agendas*A. Gubergenics have turned pandemics to their advantage to reach its goals before *A. Astroturfing is not new, though the name is relatively new to differentiate it from grass roots movement. There are previous example of armed food riots 210103-23B -C, attacks on legislative bodies, theft from medical supplies, kidnaping, and vigilante thugs enforcing denial of a problem.
-*A. Yale Psychiatrist Bandy Lee: Lockdown Protesters Resemble “Child Soldiers” and “Urban Gangs”. Though appealing and credible, this is an example of the previous observation of the temptation to use the same tactics as Trumpism, and the worst type of manipulated science journalism 200728-CV03. Cherry picking what supports a narrative, discarding what does not fit, fitting it into the sadim narrative =2= =3= [Cartoon], and creating or implying fact (SLAI). This catches attention for marketing purposes – especially during CV lockdown when there are heavy economic pressures on media to survive – but is more for an echo chamber, not informed opinion. This and other articles misrepresent the deep and nuanced assessments by Dr Lee =2= =3= =4= =5= =6= =7= =8= CV23. And don’t forget that Dr Lee is Chinese and a spy.
-‡B. CV02. Man Not Sure Why He Thought Most Psychologically Taxing Situation of His Life Would Be the Thing to Make Him Productive, Protesters Demand States Reopen, Notice Spike in Coronavirus Cases, Infuriate Them by Locking down Again.
-C. The Measles from the Time of My Grandfather: Amazonian Ethnocide Memories in Times of Covid-19, 201219-CV21. See other stubs about Brazil during CV. This mirrors the Indigenous North American experience, attributing what started as genocide becoming culturcide, and may now changing into accommodation and reconciliation, is misleading.
-D. What if the 1918H1N1 was two years ago instead of 102, what if the 2009H1N1 had matched more closely the 2005-2007 alarm about H5N1. Would it be possible to claim that CV is no worse than the flu, would gutting medical surge capacity have happened to the current unpreparedness being experienced now. 1918 Flu Pandemic Killed 12 Million Indians, and British Overlords’ Indifference Strengthened the Anti Colonial Movement.
-E. Photos: Lockdown in the World's Most Unequal Country. Twenty six years after the end of apartheid, South Africa is still the most unequal country on earth. In Cape Town well to do suburbs sit side by side with sprawling, corrugated zinc townships. Driving from one neighborhood to another can be a jarring experience at the best of times. But since the country went into lockdown in late March, the city's social divisions have been brought into sharper focus than ever. Epidemics in South African History =2= =3= =4=. South Africa Bungled the Spanish Flu in 1918. History Mustn’t Repeat Itself for Covid-19. 201224-CV05.
CV23. Polemic, Myphysis: National Guard Moving Against the Coronavirus in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency sends the requests for supplies to headquarters and the missions are sent to the 1058th Transportation Company the night before. CV25. How the US Military Could Help Fight the Coronavirus Outbreak.
-A. Massive Spending in a Crisis Brought Bloody Consequences in Ancient Athens. A historian of ancient Greece looks past a plague and explains how a massive government spending plan went badly awry 2,500 years ago.
CV25. Transportation, Travel: Global Tourism Industry May Shrink by More than 50% Due to the Pandemic. And may stay shrunk for some time as people may no longer be able to afford foreign vacations, which will hurt tourist attractions and the hospitality industry CV05.
CV26. Environment, One Health: Heal the Earth: Flatten Other Curves. The Coronavirus pandemic is just one curve that needs flattening CV27↓. Life on this planet will not be sustainable for humans over the long term unless we make behavioral changes to ensure that we don’t exceed Earth’s carrying capacity.
CV27. Learning: Gaynor Shares with Emergency Managers Lessons Learned in First Month of FEMA’s Covid-19 Response. Except for flattening the curve CV26↑ (a concept already known in medicine) no new lessons are listed. Perhaps these were lessons lost and rediscovered again (for the Nth time).
CV29. Responsibility, Decision Making: Leading in a Crisis: The Mega Challenge of Coordination. With many layers of leadership and various responding agencies, making sure crisis response efforts are tightly coordinated is critical. Here is some guidance on how to keep stakeholders working in tandem. Tandem, the application of the assembly line to disaster management (known as the phase model of emergency management) is a useful heuristic as far as initial training of doing ones part correctly so the next phase can be done successfully. However, the PDN preference is to use an orchestra model, where all parts coordinate, cooperate, collaborate to form a synergy of all actions in sync. Better yet think, of Jazz, being so in tune (the groove) with each other – a jazz assemblage includes the listeners, dancers, ambience, instruments the plan (the sheet music, or just the title) and stage crew – that one is spontaneous in blending and contributing to the music as it evolves. 200730-CV03A.
CV30. Methodology: No specific illustrations for this but having worked with collaborative social science before they generally fail due to information resistance, apathy over time, and surprisingly the ineptness at relationship building and collaboration among social scientists, with social science and other disciplines. Part of this may be due to the competition for grant money, developing the wording CV06 to get grant money, and then the obligation to do the directed research and reach the goal whether it pans out or not. Add to this that money for disaster research tends to be after the disaster starts, long after it ends, and is notorious for being pulled before completion.
-A. There is also the issue that social science research tends to follow Murphy’s Law of Research (06 Theories) =2= [List], & Issawi's Law of the Social Sciences: By the time a social science theory is formulated in such a way that it can be tested, changing circumstances have already made it obsolete =2= 200624-CV30. Are There 'Laws' in Social Science, actually yes, PDN often uses Poe’s Search and Zipf’s Search laws.
