PDN Introduction, Glossary
CV03. Information: 7 out of 10 U.S. Adults Say They Need to Take Breaks from Covid-19 News. Many say it makes them feel worse emotionally and half say they find it difficult to sift through what is true and what is not. Supports two of PDNs talking points: 1) Breaks are needed 200427-CV01, and learning to sift though dis, mis and other information during the firehose infodemic CV31B↓, which I know from personal experience of collecting CV information is exhausting and time consuming; 2) and to do learning and evaluation during a pandemic takes prior practice and familiarity. 200815-CV03, 200419-CV3, 200416-CV3, 200419-CV1A -CV3, 200329-3.2A, 200322-2C, 200209-1B. 200522-CV03.
-A. Dis/ Mis/ False -Information, Conspiracy Theory, Intentional misinterpretation for Exploitation, Manipulated Statistic, Antivax CV21↓ Logical Fallacies 201206-1A, Gaslighting, and SLAI RIDE 200428-CV18B**2, 200502-30) of narratives are as much a part of parademics as economics, grief and humor, which is to say it is observed every time and sometimes overlap with those categories. The PDN habitually looks for all three of these as definitive characteristics of a natural parademic. If these are not present and not covering a wide range of news sources then it is likely to be an astroturfed CV04B↓ (another form of false information) parademic, that is not self sustaining and a social contagion among identity groups. The Coronavirus ‘Infodemic’ Is Real. We Rated the Websites Responsible for It. MORE: Astroturfing Promoting Hydroxychloroquine to Treat Covid-19 Continues Apace. 200503-CV17.
CV04. Politics: The Nightmare Scenario: How Coronavirus Could Make the 2020 Vote a Disaster. It goes something like this: Large numbers of voters become disenfranchised because they’re worried it’s not safe to vote and that participating makes it more likely they catch the Coronavirus. Voter registration efforts, almost always geared toward in person sign ups, bring in very few new voters. A surge of demand for absentee ballots overwhelms election administrators, who haven’t printed enough ballots. In some states the fear of Coronavirus isn’t a valid reason to request an absentee ballot. Americans are forced to choose between voting in person, risking Coronavirus, or not voting at all.
-A. At the same time, confidence in the cash strapped U.S. Postal Service, whose funding is threatened to block, teeters. Its handling so many absentee votes causes concern. A flood of mailed in ballots makes it impossible to get full returns on election night. Politicians can declare victory based on early returns, and then claim that the absentees ballots are tainted with fraud. 200918-CV01A.
-B. Coronavirus will change life at some point in the future and is already changing American democracy. Unless we adapt swiftly we’re headed for a world of pain in November. Using pandemic for political exploitation has historical precedents. Protests as Congo Leader Warns of Ebola Election Disaster =2= =3= =4= =5= =6= =7= =8= =9=. How American Politicians Are Fear Mongering Their Way to Success at the Polls 2014 =2= =3= =4= [Meme]. CV03A↑ CV08B↓. 200812-CV21.2A.
CV05. Economics: Coronavirus Bailouts Will Cost Taxpayers Hundreds of Billions of Dollars – Unlike past Corporate Rescues That Actually Made Money for the US Treasury. It may not come as a surprise that taxpayers ultimately foot the bill when lawmakers spend their money to bail out a corporate industry, or the entire economy today. But this is actually the exception, not the rule. CV22.
CV08. Entertainment: Everyone Wants a Puzzle. Once dismissed as a boring family activity, jigsaw puzzles have gotten the Instagram treatment. =2= =3= =4= =5=. The popularity of puzzles was not something that the curator of PDN would have predicted, especially not to the point that stocks sold out =2= =3= =4= and people are willing to pay high prices to obtain. 201219-CV22
-A. People Are Curbing Their Stay at Home Anxiety the Analog Way: With Puzzles. Can only speculate on why, especially when there is the option of internet games where one can interact with people that you are not stuck with in close physical proximity. The reports are that these puzzle playing are associated with families, though also a solitary activity. For families these can be a cooperative game that can be done by a wide range of skill levels at the same time, can be easily stopped and restarted, allow interaction, but with something between the interactors lessens direct interaction, fosters cooperation, and requires concentration to ignore the overall stress of being cooped up. For the solitary puzzler the same apply, with the addition that one can either be solitary among others, or ignore that one is alone. The Perfect Jigsaw for Every Type of Puzzler. -B. Disaster are usually labeled by the events (earthquake, hurricane, snowstorm) but the reason something is a disaster is not the event but the impact on people. Literal impact of being crushed in a collapsed building, having home and income source blown away, being isolated, freezing and unable to get more supplies and head. This is one of the reasons PDN uses biocalamity, the threat is not limited to people and in fact people may not be seriously harmed or aware during the bradyoccult lead up to acceleration, and in some biocalamities structural infrastructure is not impacted. Parademic are the behaviors in the context of a biocalamity, not just after it accelerates and becomes a disaster from the anthropocentric view. A biocrisis in the combination of a biocalamity and parademic. A parademic can happen without an actual bioagent or environmental hazard but by a social contagion such as othering migrants CV03B↑ by claiming them as a source of disease that are taking away jobs and polluting the purity of one’s social identify group.
-C. The parademic of CV is not so much about SARS-CoV-2 (the bioagent) or Covid-19 (the pandemic), but about social isolation, unemployment =2=, gubergenic, exploitation, acceleration to one line shopping, family relations, deflecting blame, exploitation for criminal or political ends, information damage and contamination, burning out health care workers, funding of public health, social adaptation. In short parademic is what people do when their normal mundane activities can kill them. These behaviors can be positive ones that help to weather the situation and find solutions or negative ones that exacerbate the situation and hinder solutions.
CV12. Personal, Relationships: Published by the county I reside in Order of the Health Officer: Amended Parks Closure Order. The Frequently Asked Questions, is slightly more understandable, but the following excerpt from a local newsletter is the far better transliteration of the legalese into Standard American English CV06. While the county will allow certain local inland parks and recreation areas to reopen under limited conditions, the parks and beaches along the Sonoma Coast will remain closed until further notice. According to the county, there is simply no way to open the coast without attracting out of area visitors which in turn creates enforcement issues and additional exposure risk. Opening the parks and beaches to “locals” is considered unenforceable, while opening the parks and beaches but keeping the parking lots closed, pushes cars onto roads and into neighborhoods. Perhaps the greatest worry is for our local first responders and medical providers who risk additional exposure with the increased recreational activity and traffic along the Coast. We simply can’t afford to subject our first responders and other emergency service professionals to additional risks or risk overwhelming our resources.
-A. There are media reports of people defying CV orders and flocking to the beaches, some slanted toward a prejudicial interpretation about the orders. Coronavirus Stay at Home Order in California Has Police Giving Citations to People Watching Sunset at Beach. Whether you agree with epidemiological science and social distancing, the bottom line is one can be ticketed: Violation of Shelter in Place, Illegal Parking, Repeated Violations, Prohibited Travel, Endangerment of Others, Public Health Violations, and more depending on the creativity of the citing officer. Depending on your attitude this can result in multiple citations and fines with potential impoundment of a motor vehicle, having to make a court appearance, hiring a lawyer, possible imprisonment or court order to remain in home. These can become very expensive ($10,000 or more) and if you do become ill with CV you could become liable for civil suits and your own medical bills. For the most part law enforcement tend to be lax on enforcement, preferring to give a warning, and understanding legitimate needs. On the other hand if you do go to a public area, whether you are local or not, it would behoove you to leave if the area is crowded. Coronavirus in Florida: Palm Beach Police: 5 Arrested after They Tried to Get on Closed Beaches.
-B. POST COLLECTIO: Over the following months this developed into organized mass protests, riots. My own residence is near the coast in a wilderness area. After months we can sympathize with people just wanting to go to a place where they don’t have to wear a mask outside (while keeping social distance). We tend to ignore minor violations but there is the continued the local practice of warning tourists about never turning their back on the ocean and other coastal safety concerns. Along our coast there are usually a few people (and dogs) each year who become trapped when the tide moves in, are sucked out to sea by a sneaker wave, or decide it is cute to get close to mother seal and their off spring or let a dog chase them. Seal mothers will abandon their babies, a few baby seals die each year because of this.
CV15. Grief: We Need to Talk about Covid-19 Deaths. Writing guidelines to help palliative care practitioners and other medical, nursing and allied health staff provide compassionate care and manage symptoms and concerns of people at the end of life, and their families. The guidelines cover issues such as essential elements of palliative care and end of life care during Covid-19, caring for patients dying in the community, palliative care communication and care before and after death. 201215-CV15 -A.
CV15.1. There are more questions about the numbers of deaths from CV in the US. Why the Coronavirus May Be Killing More Americans than the Government Data Says. Trump Accuses New York of Padding State’s Mortality Rate by Including African American Deaths. US Covid-19 Death Toll Is Far Higher than Reported, CDC Data Suggests. US Covid-19 Deaths in Early Weeks of Pandemic Exceeded Official Number. Mortality from a pandemic is only an indicator and is meaningless without other data (context). Meaning is more nuanced than numbers, and the number of dead is a very poor metric. Puerto Rico Increases Hurricane Maria Death Toll to 2,975 =2= =3=. Coronavirus Has Now Killed More Americans than Vietnam War. ADDED: [Cartoon]. Grim Count: US Virus Toll Passes Trump’s 60,000 Marker.
CV18. Narrative, Social Reality: The Covid-19 Pandemic Doesn’t Have to Be this Confusing. Humans construct stories to wrangle meaning from uncertainty and purpose from chaos. We crave simple narratives, but the pandemic offers none. The desire to name an antagonist, be it the Chinese Communist Party or Donald Trump, disregards the many aspects of 21st century life that made the pandemic possible. In the classic hero’s journey the protagonist reluctantly departs from normal life, enters the unknown, endures successive trials, and eventually returns home, having been transformed. If such a character exists in the Coronavirus story, it is not an individual, but the entire modern world. The end of its journey and the nature of its final transformation will arise from our collective imagination and action. And they, like so much else about this moment, are still uncertain CV17, preferably with a satisfying Closure.
CV21. Syndemic, Concurrent Disasters: Vaccine Rates Drop Dangerously as Parents Avoid Doctor’s Visits =3=, CV01 CV02. Groups Sow Doubt about Covid Vaccine Before One Even Exists CV03A↑. The bradyoccult of other infectious diseases makes in possible likely that after reopening there will be more cases of these, a pandemic after the CV pandemic. At Least 89 Covid-19 Vaccines Are Being Developed. It May Not Matter. If a vaccine were available today CV23↓, would it be enough to stop this pandemic. That would depend on whether everyone who needs it can get it. But if what took place during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic happens again, then the answer is no.
CV23. Polemic, Myphysis: Web Roundup: How War, Not a Pandemic, Became America’s New Normal. The US was not prepared for a pandemic, but it was prepared for war. When a national state of emergency was declared on March 13, 2020, the Coronavirus transformed from a hoax into an invisible enemy. It has repeatedly and explicitly been announced the United States’ is at war against the virus. This is our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment, only it's not going to be localized, it's going to be happening all over the country. The urgent search for a vaccine CV21↑ was compared to as a global arms race, invoking a Cold War era planetary competition between warring countries and ideologies. CV04 CV06 CV24.
-CV23.1. Riots in Impoverished North Lebanon City amid Currency Crash, 210103-23B -C. Scattered anti government protests resumed last week as the government began easing the weeks long lockdown to limit the spread of the new Coronavirus in Lebanon, which has reported 710 cases and 24 deaths so far. The number of registered cases has dropped over the past two weeks, leading to the shortening of the nighttime curfew by one hour and allowing some businesses to resume work on Monday. CV05 CV17 CV28.
CV25. Transportation, Travel: The Commissioned Corps Was Created to Stop Plagues at the US Border. Why Hasn’t it Been Used at Airports During the Pandemic. The US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHS) employs some 6,500 public health professionals to protect the nation from foreign diseases and to serve on the front lines in public health crises. They should have been mobilized and deployed en masse in January to inspect and quarantine all arriving international passengers at US airports.
CV25.1. Paradigms of Mobility and Immobility Are Being Upended by the Pandemic. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to drastic changes in how we move about in our daily lives. Adhering to social distancing rules, millions are now working and socializing from home – only venturing out for essential trips. This shift marks a stark contrast to a mere few months ago when many were able to freely move about, not only of necessity but for desire and fun. Mobility expresses privilege. In these times of the virus, however, immobility expresses privilege, with self isolation understood to demonstrate exemplary citizenship to boot. This is clear a reversal of the mobility paradigm.
CV26. Environment, One Health: Why Your Pet Is Acting like a Weirdo During Quarantine, Explained by Animal Behaviorists. My Quarantine Cat Hates Me. Are People with Pets less Likely to Die If They Catch the Coronavirus. Video. Suspect that ones pet’s going crazy is more a projection of the observing (going crazy) human than the animal behavior. Cats in particular have always had bizarre episodes, CV lockdown or not. 201228-CV26.
CV28. Logistics: Survey Shows Regions of Elevated Food Insecurity Due to Covid-19 Pandemic. Hundreds of Georgia’s Poultry Workers Have Tested Positive for Covid-19. Trump Order Keeping Meat Packing Plants Open Worries Unions. Thousands of Pigs, Cattle Across Nation Stage Walkout Strike Following Trump’s Demands to Keep Meat Plants Open. Something like [Photo] as a meme or cartoon is likely*A CV31, especially with the recent tweet storm meltdown [Cartoon]. 200428-CV24.
-*A. MORE: This specific meme did not appear, but there was a Meme Spreads Falsehood about Vaccine Transfer Through Eating Meat
CV29. Responsibility, Decision Making: Easing Lockdowns Makes Day to Day Choices More Complicated. Is it safe to join the crowds at the beach or eat at a restaurant? To visit the elderly parents you haven’t seen in nearly two months. To reopen a struggling business. In many cases, the less than satisfying answer from the experts is: It depends.
CV30. Methodology: Video: Using Social Science to Aid in the Fight Against Covid-19.
CV31. Futuring: Silent Spring in Europe calls for a New Social Ecology. Deserted streets in Rome, empty dance halls in Berlin, died out tourist attractions in Barcelona, and a lonely Eiffel Tower in Paris: Europe is experiencing its first locked down spring. It marks an experiential as well as a paradoxical break in our everyday lives. On the one hand, Covid-19 has emerged as a brutal, tragic and unquestionable fact within world society. On the other hand, as the epicentre of the pandemic shifts from Asia to Europe and the United States, it becomes difficult to maintain the denial of a global ecological system. It produces yet unfamiliar venues to experiment with a pragmatist ecology, as well as socially and culturally heterogeneous collaborations.
-A. Rachel Carson conveyed the brutal factuality of vulnerable human bodies when she published her classic Silent Spring in 1962*B [Cover]. The book became quickly a success against an apparently uncontested modern way of life. In the heat of the Cold War, along with a general atmosphere of fierce belief in the good deeds of science and technology, Carson, a marine biologist, found that DDT and other lethal chemical products were having deleterious effects on nature as well as on humans. The rapidity of change and the speed with which new situations are created, follow the impetuous and heedless.
-*B. The concept of silence CV06, has been applied to CV in several different social contexts. The spread (bradyoccult in parademic), carriers, the impact on cities, the muted first alarms, and the wish for silencing misinformation CV03↑. Noise has been noted as a health and environmental pollutant, but for many who have not experienced silence before its lack can be staggering in terms of less stress, and the stress of something so pervasive for so long is now temporarily gone. 200322-He12 The Hush is an imaginary of a silent world MORE: The He stories have been removed. 200724-CV06C.
