PDN Introduction.
CV01. Protection: After the Crisis: How to Avoid (Some Of) Our Misleading Beliefs. With the coronavirus crisis, confirmation bias has hit us with all its might. Whether we consider the delays in deciding to close countries' borders, the tardy decision to start (or restart) mass producing masks and ventilators, the discovery that COVID-19 was in Italy weeks after it had already begun to kill Italians, just as the decision each of us makes to go outside because "we need to", and the remarkably solid belief in some parts of the world that things are "not as bad as they seem". The consequences are the devastating (underestimated) death figures that every country affected continuously chimes out.
CV02. Humor: To Challenge Misguided Beliefs about Science, Try Satire =2=.
CV03. Information: Initial Surge in News Use Around Coronavirus in the UK Has Been Followed by Significant Increase in News Avoidance. News avoidance and fatigue are not new phenomena =2= =3= =4=. If people are avoiding information then it makes it difficult to communicate new information, or debunking of erroneous information. If there is less interest then news sources are less likely to report on the subject, decreasing the amount and quality of information. 200506-CV30.1 CV30↓.

CV06. Linguistics: Media Outlets Are Talking less about “Going Viral” During the Pandemic.
Figurative use of ‘viral’ has clearly decreased this year as literal uses of ‘virus’ have gone way up. Maybe it’s time to retire the usage entirely.

CV12. Personal, Relationships: Where I live is a heavily forested area with a mix of full time residents and 2nd home owners. The official rule is for the weekenders to not come and no short term rentals. In the main violations are ignored by full timers. Usually these people don’t cause a problem and it is understood that sometimes people just need a mental break with a change in scene, and being in a wild area vulnerable to pests and fire, maintenance is necessary.
-A. A minor irritant is that on occasion visitors, or owners who don’t pay for trash services, will leave trash in the trash cans of full timers who have paid trash pick up. Though a bit rude not a real problem as it happens infrequently, most people ask permission for doing so, and I usually have room for more trash. There have however been a couple of occasions that were exasperating. Whoever sneaked in their trash did not put the lid fastener back on properly and the local raccoons strewed the trash around.
-B. Yesterday was trash day, and I put the cans out the night before. My wife and I had to make a quick trip to the local town yesterday morning. As we were leaving I had glanced at the cans to see if the cans (1 recycle, 1 trash/ garbage) had been emptied. They were not. When we returned I saw one can had been emptied but the recycle one was not. I also saw that someone had left two plastic bags of trash with our cans. In wild lands plastic trash bags left outside are verboten as animals find rip them open. Fortunately, they had been left out during the day and not for very long, so no animals had gotten to the bags.
-C. I went to check if the bags had garbage that would attack the local wildlife. They were filled with recycle, which unfortunately included several wine bottles with dregs. California raccoons have a sophisticated palette and enjoy wine [Photo], even urban dwellers have learned to rinse out wine bottles before putting in the trash.
-D. I retied the bags with the thought that if they were not picked up I would take them to the recycle dumpsters, an additional service provided in the area to keep down recycle trash. Fortunately, the bags were picked up, though I am now likely to get a call from the trash company that I went over the limit of what they pick up.
-E. It happened that a neighbor (part timer) was walking her dog walked by as I retied the bags. I said hi (from more than 6 feet) and asked if she had noticed anyone dropping the bags off while she was on her walk. Her reaction surprised me as she immediately demanded why I was accusing her. Perhaps my voice still had a vexed tone; or maybe the animosity between part timers and full timers has grown worse; or perhaps because she appeared to be of oriental ancestry the sinophobia and recent CV press confrontation, she felt a bit threatened by me being an older white male of European decent. Whatever the reason CV stress is apparently infiltrating even the hinterlands of the laid back California northern coast prior to memorial day weekend when it is uncertain which beaches are open to the public. CV26. Environment, One Health: Calling for a COVID-19 One Health Research Coalition. There is important global consensus on many issues around health and the sustainability of our socioeconomy and ecosystems. For example, global health challenges, such as emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and non-communicable diseases, are further fuelled by global trends related to climate change, growing populations, consumerism, poverty, conflict, and migration.4 However, a great deal still remains unclear or unknown. The world cannot afford to proceed without some foresight because missteps can lead to disaster. Neither can the world afford to be rigid in the charted path. Flexibility will be required as knowledge advances. Research anchored in the recognition that the health of our planet hinges on symbiotic relationships between humans, animals, and the environment that we share and in the understanding that we are interconnected by default must gather evidence for a framework within which to interpret and apply this evidence towards preventing further global catastrophes.
