CV03.1. It's Almost Time for Pandemic Apologies. The safest take on the coronavirus pandemic has always been uncertainty. There is so much about this virus we do not know, and, as a result, so little we can pronounce with justified confidence. The information we have is misleading or incomplete more often than not; models accordingly need frequent revision; and it seems there are exceptions to every plausible rule.
-A. Unfortunately, uncertainty CV17 doesn't play well in politics CV04, and long formed habits of confident statements by officials, experts, and pundits were not broken by the appearance of COVID-19. The result is many things many people have said with at least an affect of strong certainty have been proven wrong. Many more of these things will be proven wrong over the next month or two, as states implement varying plans to reopen their economies. ADDED Reopening the US: States Relax Rules, but Some Could Return to Stay at Home Orders If Coronavirus Cases Surge.
-B. In these coming weeks, then, it will increasingly become time for apologies. If we hope to come out of this with anything left of public trust in expertise and institutions, those who got it wrong must be willing to say so CV02 CV04.
CV05. Economics: Probably more of an economic and political CV04 decision that public health one, but with the CDC neutralized CV03↑ there may be enough dread that fewer people than expected will go, but unlikely. If there is a large resurgence of CV from beach areas already reopened, it is unlikely to be noted before the 25th. Beaches Reopen Before Memorial Day, but Is It Safe to Go CV08. [Meme, Cartoon] 200504-CV29.
-A. Memorial day is the unofficial start of summer. With the promise that CV will end with warm weather and the pattern that other coronaviruses are less likely during the summer, there may be a unconscious belief that it is also the end of CV, at least until the fall.

CV07. Emergence: Gangs Deliver Food in Poor Cape Town Area amid Lockdown. As soon as these guys were given an opportunity to do something good, they grabbed the opportunity with both hands and are just wringing it for everything they can. The gangs also benefit, getting some food as well as the chance to stay relevant in tough times. They also seem to enjoy the role of modern day Robin Hoods. Street and prison gangs often begin as vigilante protection of a neighborhood and/or ethnic group, but tend to become corrupted into criminal activity.

Before COVID-19, I used to spend a lot of time feeling like the Cat in The Cat in the Hat. I was holding a cup, the milk, the cake and a little toy ship, while bouncing up and down on a ball.
CV22. Longue Duree: Lessons of Smallpox Eradication and COVID-19. In the midst of a global pandemic with COVID-19, we seek lessons from the past and we try to define what leadership instructions might be useful today: 1) Know the truth. It is the only way to avoid blind and inefficient action. 2) To know the truth we need a robust surveillance system providing data that can supplant opinion with fact. 3) Truth requires proper responses. 4) Actions require assessment and mid course corrections and constant quality improvement.

-B. Independence of Indian Lands from states is a legally decided issue. Reversing it would mean disruption of law, property, civil rights, sovereignty, emergency management, court jurisdictions, public works, medical systems and providing public health services, citizenship, bring into question previous treaties that were violated, et cetera. In would require dismantling everything that allows native reservations to have casino’s in states that don’t allow gambling.
-C. Area Self Isolation 200415-CV7 obviously occurs during pandemics, but the reason so far has for protection from a contagion, not ideological or to preempt social collapse. There are still the survival bunkers and previously isolated compounds that tend to not be near heavy traffic routes, that could be bases of operation for raids for supplies that have become serious shortages.
CV23. Polemic, Myphysis: The Miner’s Canary: COVID-19 and the Rise of Non Traditional Security Threats. To face them, we need new definitions of security and a global approach. COVID-19 is not a black swan. For years, foresight experts have been warning about the potential emergence of a pandemic, while public health experts have been calling the attention of the international community to the dangerous security impact of global outbreaks. The novel coronavirus is, however, a canary in the coal mine. The pandemic is the harbinger of a security landscape marked by the rise of non traditional security threats. These challenges will act as threat multipliers, further exacerbating existing security dilemmas and the complexity of the 2020s. COVID-19 is the template for what lies ahead, that is, unless we take action. The sooner we understand the fundamental transformation ahead of us, the sooner we can adapt our concepts and institutions to guarantee the safety of people, states, and the international community.

CV24. Norms: The Doomsday Clock Meets the Coronavirus. Remember the threats of nuclear war and climate change. After a few months of life with the coronavirus pandemic, the existential threats to humankind that once dominated so much of our thinking may seem much more removed from today than they are. In fact, as the person who convened the Jan. 23, 2020 announcement in which the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the hands of its iconic Doomsday Clock twenty seconds closer to midnight, I have been asked more than once, “How did the Doomsday Clock miss the coronavirus”. The truth is that it didn’t.
-A. The Doomsday Clock Statement notes: “Over the last two years, we have seen influential leaders denigrate and discard the most effective methods for addressing complex threats … in favor of their own narrow interests and domestic political gain. By undermining cooperative, science and law based approaches to managing the most urgent threats to humanity, leaders have helped to create a situation that will, if unaddressed, lead to catastrophe, sooner rather than later” CV29. Erosion of science from policy and decisions =2= began before current administration, but definitely has accelerated the problem.
CV26. Environment, One Health: It Turns out Covid Isn’t Helping the Climate CV18. Over the past two months, a popular talking point on the internet has been that CoronaVirus is nature’s way of fighting climate change - having concluded that mankind was incapable of acting to stop it. This has been prompted by the steep drop in carbon emissions resulting from the slowdown of economic activity. But new data published today suggests that the COVID pandemic will barely make a dent on manmade climate change.
