PDN Introduction.
CV01. Protection: Michigan Ranks Seventh in Coronavirus Death Rate. Why so High. Even as surrounding states are catching up in number of coronavirus cases (Illinois now has more than twice Michigan’s COVID-19 caseload) Michigan still stands out for its high per capita death rate. The list of contributing factors are credible and probable, and includes social factors, but it would be interesting to learn the reason why Age of Resistance: How a Virus Riled up Michigan and Spawned a Rebellion was ignored: Not wanting to antagonized an already potentially violent group, editorial slant to avoid placing blame, political appeasement, financial, and that it would be hard to directly link infection to protest as the same individual were unlikely to be practicing other safety measures.

CV03. Information: China Withheld Data on Coronavirus from WHO, Recordings Reveal. Complaints by officials at odds with body’s public praise of Beijing’s response to outbreak. The recordings show officials complaining in meetings during the week of 6 January that Beijing was not sharing data needed to evaluate the risk of the virus to the rest of the world. It was not until 20 January that China confirmed coronavirus was contagious and 30 January that the WHO declared a global emergency. Tough call when working with governments that depend of obfuscation to remain in power CV06↓. Another possibility is that the Chinese government may not have known if CV was infectious themselves, and may rather be considered obstructionist rather than incompetent. If called out about not being cooperative, authoritarian states are more likely to become even less cooperative than cooperative. This will also support the narrative that CV is China’s fault CV06↓. ADDED China Delayed Releasing Coronavirus Info, Frustrating WHO.
CV04. Politics: White House Shifts Focus from Coronavirus. The administration's task force has scaled back its meetings, and its top infectious diseases expert, Anthony Fauci, said he hasn't met with President Trump in weeks. The White House's designated testing czar likewise said he is to return to his regular duties this month, and the president has shifted his focus to quashing protests nationwide in response to the death of George Floyd.

CV16. Consequences, Social Change: Out Evolving Coronavirus by Evolving Our Own Scientific Ingenuity and Social Practices. If there is one thing that the coronavirus pandemic has exposed, it is that there is much that we still don't know about the world around us. Forget about the trillions – okay, more than trillions – of galaxies in the universe that we'll never explore. Just at our feet or in the air around us are cohabitants of our own world – viruses – that occupy an odd liminal space, pushing our understanding of the meaning of life. They exist in what is effectively a hidden world, almost a "first Earth" that is both just offstage and right in front of us, and even inside of us. It's a world teeming with activity, full of blooming, buzzing confusion, competition, and evolution. Sometimes we explore this world intentionally, but at other times we run into it by accident, most noticeably when the alarms on one of the megafauna biodetectors – people and animals – go off. It's when these encounters happen that we remember that the space of things we don't know is truly unfathomable.
