CV18. Narrative, Social Reality: Four Experts Investigate How the 5G Coronavirus Conspiracy Theory Began. Science is slow and methodical. So far fetched explanations about how the outbreak started began filling the vacuum. Among these strange explanations is a theory that the recent rollout of 5G technology CV19 is to blame. Conspiracy theories about mobile phone technology have been circulating since the 1990s, and have long historical roots CV22. Doctors first talked of "radiophobia" as early as 1903. Following on from fears about power lines and microwaves in the 1970s (actually earlier as farmers were opposed to power lines going over their fields for both belief it would harm crops, against big business power companies, and being a FDR New Deal), opponents of 2G technology in the 1990s suggested that radiation from mobile phones could cause cancer, and that this information was being covered up. Other conspiracy theories about 5G include the idea that it was responsible for the unexplained deaths of birds and trees. The coronavirus 5G conspiracy theory comes in several different strains, of varying degrees of implausibility. 200504-CV20. 200622-CV23. 201221-CV18B.
CV22. Longue Duree: New Research Reveals Political Changes Wrought by the Black Death. The political legacy of that pandemic lingered more than 500 years after the disease struck—well into the late 19th century. Harder hit geographic areas experienced a fundamental reconfiguration of political and socioeconomic structures, while locations with milder outbreaks mostly maintained existing political and economic conditions.
CV23. Polemic, Myphysis: Iran Commander Says U.S. Is in Rapid Decline Over Protests, Coronavirus.
CV25. Movement: Study Shows Contagions Could Be Catalysts for Mass Migration. Disease outbreaks, civil unrest and war CV23 often bring about the biggest movements of people (forced migration). Epidemics are examples of wider contagion phenomena which also include social segregation, infodemics (waves of misinformation), and social unrest. Modelling suggests that when faced with either threat or opportunity, people tend to avoid risks, seek an advantage, or both.
