CV04. Politics: Brazil Condemned to Historic Tragedy by Bolsonaro's Virus Response – Top Doctor. The politicization of the coronavirus crisis and the Brazilian government’s deliberate “torpedoing” of social distancing efforts has condemned South America’s largest country to a historic tragedy that will most punish the poor, Brazil’s most respected medical voice has said. Against the World, Brazil Eases Quarantine Before Reaching Peak Deaths. The Politics of Pandemics: Why Some Countries Respond Better than Others, the capacity of a state and the degree of economic inequality among its residents will determine how successful it is in coping effectively with a pandemic like COVID-19.
CV05. Economics: US Unemployment Drops Unexpectedly to 13.3% amid Outbreak, as reopened businesses began recalling millions of workers faster than economists had predicted, triggering a rally Friday on Wall Street and giving Trump something to boast about amid his reelection bid. The US Economy Added 2.5 Million Jobs in May. 3 Reasons to Pause Before Celebrating Today's Surprising Jobs Numbers.
-A. Despite Global Reopening Push, Some Jobs Are Gone for Good.
-B. ADDED The Unemployment Rate Improved in May, but Left Black Workers Behind. Government Job Losses Are Piling Up, and it Could Get Worse. A Nobel Prize Winning Economist Is Warning That Friday's Seemingly Encouraging Job Report Is Actually Alarming. This Is Why. The May Jobs Report Had 'Misclassification Error' That Made the Unemployment Rate Look Lower than it Is. Here's What Happened, Ignore Paul Krugman's Conspiracy Theory That Trump Manipulated Jobs Report, A Good Jobs Report Does Not Mean a Rigged Jobs Report.
CV06. Linguistics: Fraught Language on Controlling Virus Carries Risk for Compliance. The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced a recalibration of familiar language and raised questions of how leaders should communicate with their constituents in a public health crisis.
CV11. Exploitation: Masks Sold to Navajo Hospitals Don’t Meet FDA Standards CV04 CV16 CV22 CV28, 200518-CV22.1A, 200513-CV33, 200426-CV27C. The Indian Health Service acknowledged on Wednesday (that would be May 27, media reports started about May 22) that 1 million respirator masks it purchased from a former Trump White House official =2= =3= =4= =5= =6= =7= do not meet Food and Drug Administration standards for use in health care settings by health care providers. Navajo Nation Residents to Be under Strictest Lockdown Yet. COVID-19 Further Strains Care Disparities Among Native Americans. Underfunded IHS, isolation from resources pose major concern for tribes during pandemic =2=.
CV15. Death: Stripped of its Cultural Rites, New Orleans Is at a Loss for How to Mourn Covid-19 Deaths. Smaller funerals, no second line, no traditional sendoff: It’s like their soul is not being released by all of the community. Other cultures also had difficulties with mourning when not able to send off the dead properly. Perhaps, as was done after Katrina, there will be mass second lines as memorials post CV.
CV22. Longue Duree: How the First Modern Pandemic Made Key Workers its Early Victims. The Russian flu was the first truly global pandemic and it was spread by an interconnected world, of mail delivery and telegraph workers.
CV22.1. The Eerily Similar Pandemic We Could Have Learned from but Didn’t. There is a sad precedent of pandemic disease threatening the residents of care institutions – and of authorities not heeding the dangers CV27. Protecting US Nursing Homes Would Have Significantly Slashed Covid-19 Deaths.
CV30. Methodology: Science Alone Can’t Solve Covid-19. The Humanities Must Help. Scholars of society, language, and culture will be integral to addressing the broader issues raised by the pandemic. During the Covid-19 crisis, decision makers (unfortunately not key ones) have arguably become better at listening to scientists and following their directives. But the pandemic has also exposed social problems that go beyond science. Here, the humanities and social sciences must play the leading role in crafting a response. A caution, though gratifying to the curator of parademic, Humanities and Social Science will not be a magical cure, collaboration and wholism are. This is perhaps a start of a long process, one that will be resisted by decision makers and hard science (and humanities and social science).
