PDN Introduction.
CV01. Protection: Trump Officials Seek to Reassure Public about Safety of a Potential Coronavirus Vaccine =2=. With their track record of misinformation =2= =A= =3= this is a sisyphean task [Cartoon =2=]. Just 50% of Americans Plan to Get a Covid-19 Vaccine. Here’s How to Win over the Rest.

-A. Masks (red) have become a more important search trend than TP (blue).
CV03. Information: Nearly Half of UN Member Countries Have Obstructed Coronavirus Coverage. [Cartoon].
CV04. Politics: South Dakota Governor Promises No Social Distancing When Trump Attends Mount Rushmore Celebration. Beyond being a superspreader event, this is potentially more heinous than the Wounded Knee Massacre. There is a likelihood of a confrontation between Native Americans and hyped up security in an already long CV22 and acrimonious situation, along with tendentious conflicting narratives CV18. Mount Rushmore Won’t Be Targeted, South Dakota Governor Warns: Not on My Watch. Faces of the Conquerors: Trump Trip to Rushmore Draws Fire, and literally could become a fire. -A. ADDED Donald Trump Should Stay Away from Mount Rushmore, Sioux Leader Says. The planned visit to the monument on stolen Native land risks spreading coronavirus. Mount Rushmore: Protest Planned in Keystone Ahead of President Trump's Black Hills Visit. [Cover MAD #544, April 2017, Meme]. Trump Says He Looks like Lone Ranger in a Mask and Likes It. I’m all for masks. I think masks are good. People have seen me wearing one. If I were in a tight situation with people, I would absolutely. When there’s nobody around, I don’t see any reason to be wearing it. Trump suggested a federal mandate was unnecessary and continued to frame mask wearing as a matter of choice. 200701-CV16.
CV05. Economics: Economist: Societal Costs of Covid-19 Outweigh Individual Costs. Based on our cost benefit analysis, is that the best public health strategy would be to do whatever we can to contain the virus. The best strategy is what we call a "smart containment strategy" that focuses on testing, tracing and quarantining the infected. This strategy would save the U.S. economy about $10 trillion compared to letting the disease spread uncontrolled. But even if we have difficulty testing and tracing, some social distancing is still desirable.
-A. People sometimes frame the policy response to COVID-19 as a trade off between lives and livelihoods, and they ask whether it's worth killing our economy to save people's lives. But what they forget is that people won't go back to a normal life and consumer demand won't really recover if the virus is spreading through our country and killing people. We need to contain the virus to allow for a real economic recovery as opposed to a temporary sugar high.
CV05.1. Goldman Sachs Has Done the Math and a National Mask Mandate to Halt the Spread of Coronavirus Would Have a Big Impact on the US Economy. A recent report from Goldman Sachs projects that a lack of a national policy mandating the use of facial coverings throughout the U.S. is delivering an unnecessary hit to the domestic economy. A national face mask mandate could partially substitute for renewed lockdowns, as COVID-19 inflections flare up in a number of southern and western states in the U.S., that would otherwise subtract 5% from gross domestic product.
CV08. Entertainment, Recreation: Sales of Canoes, Kayaks, Other Outdoor Gear Are on the Mend, Triggering Shortages in the Pandemic.
CV16. Consequences, Social Change: A Post Pandemic World Is Unlikely to Focus on Meeting Need over Human Greed.
CV18. Narrative, Social Reality: This Is What Happens When We Put a Real Estate Developer in Charge of a Pandemic. Real estate developers begin as storytellers. They drive a few stakes into an empty expanse and begin spinning a tale of winding streets and welcoming houses, of shops and schools and playgrounds, a community center, a swimming pool, a golf course.
CV20. Communication: Smiling in the Masked World of Covid-19. With faces covered to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 some of the facial cues that people rely on to connect with others – such as a smile that shows support – are also obscured.
CV21. Syndemic, Concurrent Disasters: Flu Virus with Pandemic Potential Found in China.
CV22. Longue Duree: China Is Treating Covid-19 with a Blast from the (Distant) Past. Despite long held questions over the efficacy of Chinese traditional medicine, Chinese experts maintain that an herbal formulation based on a nearly 2,000 year old text is showing promise in treating COVID-19.
CV23. Polemic, Myphysis: The U.S. Military’s Second Coronavirus Wave May Be a Tsunami. For many weeks DOD’s effort to cope with the pandemic had been on a positive track. After new cases peaked in mid April, DOD’s aggressive response seemed to be working. The level of new cases dropped steadily. However, at the end of May, DOD started opening up, personnel and troop movements resumed, and the number of new cases has skyrocketed. Although the level of infection is still relatively low, the number needs to level off soon before the infection gets out of control. ADDED Army Quarantines 90 Soldiers with Coronavirus at Fort Bragg.
CV24. Norms: Coronavirus Spike: Why Getting People to Follow Restrictions Is Harder the Second Time Around. The two primary predictors were feelings of "duty to obey the government" and "personal morality". Simply, people were most compliant if they felt a stronger duty to obey government instructions, and if they thought it was morally wrong to flout the rules. These findings suggest social norms, rather than fear of COVID-19, motivated compliance the most.

CV27.1. Florida DeSantis Kills Online Learning Program amid Virus Resurgence.
CV30. Methodology: #Book. Anthropology of Infectious Disease [Cover]. In contrast to a strictly biomedical framework, the core argument of the book is that infectious diseases cannot be understood through biology alone but rather must be considered within the context of the cultural and social worlds they inhabit. The book emphasizes the interactions between biologic, political, economic, sociocultural, and ecologic factors and how these factors affect the emergence, prevention, treatment, distribution, cultural experiences, and global impact of pathogens. Explores connections between humans, the environment, and other organisms, the role of social factors, and social experiences of suffering. Could be overwhelming for the novice reader. Sounds very much like parademic, if not quite as wholistic of the social aspects and covering the relation to environmental change.
CV31. Futuring: Mark Cuban: This Is the New Interview Question Employers Will Ask Job Hunters after the Pandemic. What did you learn during the pandemic of 2020, what skills did you add during the pandemic of 2020. Keep on adding to your skill set, no matter what it is. Use this time to become great at it, because that’s where the opportunities start to open up. If you just sit back and wonder what’s next, then it becomes all the more challenging.
CV32. Anthromes: Density, Equity, and the History of Epidemics in New York City. Current responses to COVID-19 have a lot in common with the long history of epidemics that have devastated the health and well being of the city's population CV22. Today, as during the epidemics that scourged New York in the 19th century, those most affected are those most essential to the functioning of the economy. Also revived is the question of the efficacy of "social distancing" and the effect it might have on the future of cities and of urban density in general. Some affluent New Yorkers have fled the city for the suburbs and rural areas, and some urban planners are left wondering to what degree urban density should be reduced in order to protect residents from contagious diseases. And we see a revival of questions related to equity of response across the population and its relationship to the city's economy CV05.
