CV03.1. How Much Does Fake Coronavirus News Affect People’s Real Life Health Behavior. We certainly don’t want to state categorically that fake news is not dangerous, but we suspect that real world behavioral effects will mostly emerge in contexts where individuals seek out many stories all advocating the same position, and which are congenial to the individual’s existing views; antivax or climate change denial networks would be a good example of this. What our research strongly suggests is that casual exposure to a novel fake news story is likely to have negligible effects on future behavior.
-A. This does not contradict the hypothesis of parademic that beliefs influence behavior. There are other factors such as: 1) What are the a priori beliefs; 2) The narratives a fake news supports, is it just circulating misinformation, or does it employ marketing techniques to increase its effectiveness and target a select audience; 3) What happens with constant exposure and no counter information; 4) What is the impact of a small change (we already know small changes can have big consequences over time), where-when is happens, and relative status and position of a small change on a group they may influence. Overall the findings are consistent with my observations, and if it survives peer review, will add to quantifiable data that has generally be lacking.
CV03.2. Journalists Operate in Increasingly Suffocating Atmosphere in Spain CV30↓. Polarization and attempts by far right party to smear fact checkers and journalists corner press freedom in the country. Spain’s far right party wants the government to regulate fact checkers. Its proposed bill explicitly forbids the verification of any statement on social media, blogs, generic websites, print, online outlets and broadcasters’ unless the media organization publicly states its affiliation, if any, to a political party, government or ideology. The bill also prohibits the fact checking of opinions and includes a provision by which fact checkers can be held legally liable for labeling them as fake news.

CV05. Economics: Next COVID Casualty: Cities Hit Hard by the Pandemic Face Bankruptcy. The pandemic will reduce local government revenues by an estimated US$11.6 billion in 2020. With COVID-19 requiring residents to stay home and stores to shutter, the bulk of this reduction comes from a slump in local sales taxes. Declines will continue into 2021.
-A. State revenues are heading in the same direction, so many U.S. cities will need to rely on help from the federal government. And if federal assistance arrives, it will not fix every city’s budget. The pandemic has hit budgets so hard that even cities in relatively good financial health – including those with rainy day funds to help them through an emergency – will face significant changes to staffing and services. Among those services are public health, sanitation, water, health inspection of restaurants, animal and pest control, all of which influence the possibility of pandemic.

CV11. Exploitation: Some Crimes Have Seen Drastic Decreases During Coronavirus, but Not Homicides in the United States. The various restrictions put in place to combat the spread of coronavirus in recent months have disrupted life for everyone – including criminals. This report is global, not just US.
-A. Little change to homicide rates or shootings in the first month after stay at home orders. One possible reason for this is people committing these types of crime are unlikely to be concerned with stay at home orders – this is an untested assumption. In a separate analysis of crime data, murders were up 21.8% in 36 US through May – but are murders the same as last year, are they related to robberies (which are down), are there more domestic abuse murders. Other academics have said it is difficult to draw conclusions on homicide rates during the pandemic due to a lack of long term data. As Murders Rise, New York City Turns to a Police Alternative.

CV14. Uncategorized, Miscellaneous: Why the Novel Coronavirus Has the Power to Launch a Pandemic. As a general rule PDN does not post hard science clinical information. This one is an exception not because of what it says (which is likely correct), but what it does not say. The biggest reason why CV had the power to go global was because of people. Its biological characteristics helped, but people are who gave it the power to apply its virulent capabilities. These were not mentioned at all.
CV20. Communication: Inside the White House's Attempt to Message its Way out of the Coronavirus Crisis, with a ramped up public safety campaign this month have run into a pair of internal roadblocks: A lack of dramatic, concrete policy actions to match the communications push — and a president who often struggles to follow the same talking point playbook as his team..

CV30. Methodology: DHS Gathered Intelligence Reports on 2 Journalists Covering Portland Protests =2=. This is worrisome – especially as framed and in the current context CV03.2↑ CV33↓. There are legitimate reasons to be aware of those who have a proclivity to share classified material – but that is not directly CV related. The parademic interest is that it reminds me that as part of collection of open source material one becomes familiar with sources, editorial bents, publishers, authors. After 10 years I have to watch my bias. Having developed expectations over time that certain authors and sources are reliable in reporting facts (though they have their bias in how they report), and those that can be depended on to distort, spin, misinterpret, or ignoring certain types of stories.
-A. In terms of method it is worth knowing journalists, pundits, influences and trolls. If for no other reason than if I need to find a particular perspective of a story, or one with better quality of writing that what I did find, I know who and where to look. For any researchers there is always a chance of being contacted by a journalists, or bloggers, or those pretending to be news people, and it is worthwhile to have an idea who well they do science journalism. I also make an effort to provide links that are not behind paywalls or limit the number of articles one can have.
-B. This is part of metadata, data about data: Date collected, date of event, date of reporting, who reports, how many times reported by other sources, variations of the story.... This level of information is not usually collected but easy enough to obtain via digital means. For example the subject article is found at multiple sources that have a “liberal view”, and tend toward particular interpretations of government over reach. PDN itself tends to be an artefact of a particular agenda, as reports from opposing agendas related to CV tend to be reactive after other reports, and have a repetitive narrative that becomes very boring and adds nothing to the understanding the parademic behaviors exhibited during the first year of CV.
