CV04. Politics: In Guatemala, the Virus Shows its Power to Kill Trust. In many less developed countries, the first wave is just now picking up speed. With fewer resources and restless populations, some of those nations’ governments are seeing their political lives put in danger by the coronavirus. As citizens are asked to endure lockdowns and economic deprivation as a result of pandemic measures, trust becomes a currency increasingly precious. Eroding it are doubts about the statistics their leaders share, what competence they show in managing the virus and the economy, and where government money flows.

CV05. Economics: Conservative Austerity Created the Mask Wars. Anti mask tantrums of conspiracists or wing nuts attract the most attention, they’re ultimately just a symptom of something much more dangerous: the long running erosion of public programs in the United States, which set the stage for a type of extreme individualism that extends to almost every aspect of American life today. Conservatives have spent decades shrinking the scope and efficacy of social welfare initiatives. Now the near total abdication of the government during the pandemic has shifted even more responsibility for weathering the outbreak onto individuals, and the result is a vicious clash between pro and anti mask culture warriors.             -A. Austerity is not the right term. This was more of an subterfuge to undermine socialist programs, to claim fiscal responsibility to cover that spending was still increasing to other priorities. How else to explain increasing national debt when so much was underfunded.

CV08. Entertainment, Recreation: Pro Golf Without Fans in an Eerie Green Expanse. Players have gotten used to competing without fans, it was a jarring experience for me, a reporter covering a sporting event for the first time since Michigan State beat Ohio State nearly four months ago.

            -A. The first of many signs of the times came when I walked past a thermal camera monitor that showed my body temperature was at least 100.4 degrees. A hand held device was then pointed at my head and showed I wasn’t in fact running hot. I wasn’t in the clear yet, though, I had to affirm that I had no symptoms associated with COVID-19 and had not been in close contact with anyone diagnosed with it.

            -B. Upon entering the media center, I put on my mask – as requested in writing and with signage on the door. I was escorted to my own work space in a socially distanced room. On the white table, a bottle of hand sanitizer, wipes and a mask were waiting.

            -C. The impact of CV on sports has been substantial, but news about it has not been very informative about the social impacts of CV. It may be that this is a reflection of my lack of interest in sports, but from what I have seen it is still news about sports, CV replacing injuries, lack of crowds, and role models. [ADDED Cartoon]. Whether denying coronavirus or climate change, many deploy the same unfounded strategies and messages. 1) Deny the problem exists. 2) Deny responsibility, blame others or no mistakes were made and actions were a success Mnuchin: White House Absolutely Does Not Regret Pushing States to Reopen. 3) Downplay the threat, often accompanied by ad hominems, and hiding or creating confusion about evidence. 4) Attack the solutions as too costly. 5) It’s too late, We Need to Live with It: White House Readies New Message for the Nation on Coronavirus. Polemic, Myphysis: Israeli Defence Contractors Partner with UAE Tech Firm to Fight Coronavirus, partnering with Abu Dhabi based technology company Group 42 to develop technologies to help fight the new coronavirus. During 2014Ebola there was a like reapproachment between Cuba and the US that lead to reopening of the US Embassy and other mutual beneficial agreements. Unfortunately that was all destroyed by a later administration.
