PDN Introduction.
CV01. Protection: White House's Birx Urges Mask Use Where Covid-19 Rates Are Rising. Unknown if this is all that she can say in current position and political climate. How large of an area with rising cases. A neighborhood, a city, a county, state, whole country, whole planet. The parademic position would be that given asymptomatic spread which allows about four days to shared with other, and with last count 40 states with rising cases, and 20 states are now mandating masks, its clear that everyone should mask and shelter in place. In fact this should have been done months ago. If that had been done we would not be facing even more draconian choices now.
-A. I’ve noted that the containment and control of CV is like previous experienced pandemic diseases. In those bioevents it was reasonable to allow a certain number of cases to arise before moving into a higher response posture. Previous knowledge and experience don’t apply to CV. We are literally in a situation like waiting to send in heavy fight fighting equipment only after a certain number of acres have burned – when the fire is an area with long term drought, hot dry wind, high fuel load, and next to an urban area. One was already too late before the first couple of acres. No one is to blame because the nature of CV was novel to previous history and understanding. But now we know more, and waiting to mask is like waiting to call the fire department is only after the first third of the house in burning. [ADDED Cartoon].
CV03. Information: How We Make Decisions During a Pandemic. As strict stay at home orders are lifted, people face a number of decisions. Mundane logistical questions – Should I go get my hair cut. When can I picnic with friends. What should I wear to the hardware store. – during the COVID-19 pandemic carry implications for personal and public health, in some cases life or death ones.
-A. When multiplied through the population, seemingly small decisions can either dramatically slow or accelerate this pandemic. So we might like to think that our behavioral choices are based purely on the best information we have. But that isn't the case, experts say. In fact, we are all susceptible to biases that push and pull our brains in invisible ways.
-B. This happens in part because of overconfidence in our ability to know why we make the choices we do. There's a powerful belief in the value of introspection, which much of social psychology and psychological science has shown is a mistake. We are not good at understanding what our brains are doing.
CV05. Economics: Approach to Global Resilience Should Be Built on the 'Five Capitals' Say Cranfield Academics. In a letter published by the journal, Nature, Cranfield academics are calling for global resilience to be shaped around the 'Five Capitals' - natural, human, social, built, and financial. The academics believe that too often silos exist within governments and within organizations and businesses that mean risks are not anticipated quickly enough or prepared for well enough.
-A. Crucially, connections are not made between different parts of society. A recent example of this was illustrated in when two Permanent Secretaries in the UK Government revealed that previous exercises to tackle pandemics had not included any economic planning.
-B. This is not a One Health, whole of society approach. This is more about Continuity of Business. An unfortunate social reality is that those who have the money for interdisciplinary projects are interested in needs that are acrimonious to life that is not a resource, labor pool, or consumers (buyers) of products.
CV18. Narrative, Social Reality: One Group That’s Really Benefitted from Covid-19: Antivaxxers. Investigation of 409 English language antivaxx social media accounts shows that they now have 58 million followers. For 147 of the largest accounts, with 49 million followers, we have calculated that they have gained at least 7.8 million followers since 2019, an increase of 19%. This article provides a larger social context than simply social media. Our Itch to Share Helps Spread Covid-19 Misinformation. 200709-CV11.1.
-A. Anatomy of a Covid-19 Conspiracy Theory, then need just the right ingredients to take off within a population and the coronavirus pandemic has been a breeding ground for them. How fear, wealth and social media all play a role. Mother of Florida Teen Who Died from Covid-19 Didn't Believe Kids Needed Masks, Took Cues from QAnon. Anti Maskers Are Posting Selfies Wearing Bogus Netted Masks to Appear Compliant with Rules They Don't Agree With.
CV20. Communication: Speaking of Pandemics: The Art and Science of Risk Communication. Public health messages should be loud and clear, so that everyone listens and stays safe. But that’s easier said than done – especially with a case as complex as Covid-19.
CV21. Syndemic, Concurrent Disasters: A Heat Wave Is Looming for States with the Worst Covid-19 Outbreaks, real worry about indoor transmission.
CV21.1. Covid-19 as Analogy for Antimicrobial Resistance. Being in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic sets the right stage for us to ponder the problem of antimicrobial resistance, or AMR. What is exactly the connection between COVID-19 and AMR. To what extent is this connection a social science issue.
-A. Although AMR is not at the forefront of the current pandemic, the COVID-19 pandemic does illustrate the complex connection between bacterial and viral infections. Viral infections like COVID-19 cannot be treated with antibiotics. However, the damage caused by viral infections makes it easier for certain bacteria to cause secondary infections, such as bacterial pneumonia, that are treated with antibiotics.
-B. Overall, it is clear that inappropriate treatment of COVID-19 and secondary infections, and the use of antibiotics as a preventive measure can be an enormous driver of AMR.
It is worrying in this context that there are few formal recommendations for the inclusion of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) in disaster planning or emergency response preparedness efforts. The depletion of stock of medical supplies and protective equipment CV28↓ due to COVID-19 can also have devastating consequences for the management of other diseases. For example, due to the risk of COVID-19 infection.
CV25. Movement: Russia Sets Date to Resume International Flights, Defends Anti Viral Drug. The Russian government on Friday proposed international flights should resume from July 15 after it reopened sports facilities and restaurants, despite recording thousands of new cases, and as it continued trials of drugs to treat COVID-19.

It is likely that there are supplies, but these are not being shared as agencies want to still have surge stocks for themselves. America Still Doesn’t Have Enough N95 Masks. CV21.1B↑.
CV32. Anthromes: Shelter is one of the basic life support needs. America's Looming Housing Crisis. So far this month, one third of Americans have failed to make their full monthly housing payments on time CV05. The figures were roughly the same last month and the month before that. Around 10 percent of mortgages in this country have gone into forbearance. Similar so called hardship programs are locking in millions of people to terms with which they may or may not be able to comply next week, much less six months from now.
-A. Eventually the pain will come, probably sooner rather than later with the end of the $600 in additional weekly unemployment benefits set to expire at the end of July along with moratoriums on eviction in many cities. Defaults are going to pile up until practically the only people continuing to pay rent in this country will be the foreign tycoons sitting on former mom and pop storefronts in Manhattan, holding out hope for the return of the city's wealthy population and a return to in person Lululemon* sales.
-*B. Unsure of the meaning here. The cloths marketing line, sexual innuendo, face to face selling, marketing to appeal to foreigners.
CV33. Legal: US Withdrawal from WHO Is Unlawful and Threatens Global and US Health and Security. The US Congress, the courts, and the public all have the power to block this reckless decision. The USA entered WHO membership through a 1948 joint resolution passed by both houses of Congress and this resolution has been supported by successive administrations. Former President Harry Truman explicitly referenced that resolution as his legal basis for joining WHO. The current US administration's unilateral action notifying the UN that the USA is withdrawing violates US law because it does not have express approval of Congress to leave WHO. A Supreme Court precedent has made clear that “When the President takes measures incompatible with the expressed or implied will of Congress, his power is at its lowest ebb”. 200709-CV04.
-A. Withdrawal from WHO would have dire consequences for US security, diplomacy, and influence. WHO has unmatched global reach and legitimacy. The US administration would be hard pressed to disentangle the country from WHO governance and programmes. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is among six WHO regional offices and is headquartered in Washington, DC, USA. The USA is also a state party to two WHO treaties: the WHO Constitution, establishing it as the “directing and co-ordinating authority on international health”; and the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005), the governing framework for epidemic preparedness and response.
-CV33.1. Border Authorities Use Pandemic Powers to Expel Immigrants. US has a history of keeping out and deportation by using disease as the rationale.
