PDN Introduction.
CV04. Politics: Chinese Customs Stalls Vaccine Shipment for Trials in Canada. Clinical trials in Canada of an early Chinese front runner in the race for a coronavirus vaccine are in limbo, with Chinese customs authorities holding up shipment of the injections for weeks. Health Canada gave approval for clinical trials for a potential vaccine developed jointly by Tianjin based CanSino Biologics and Chinese military scientists, on May 16.
-A. When the agreement for the clinical trials was struck in May, many analysts were surprised given the strains between the two countries over the arrest of Huawei Technologies executive Meng Wanzhou, the arrest of two Canadians on espionage charges in China and Beijing’s blocks on imports of Canadian canola and meat.
CV05. Economics: Energy Is a Basic Need, and Many Americans Are Struggling to Afford it in the Covid-19 Recession. Several months into the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, lower income families are struggling to pay their energy bills. That’s a big concern during extreme events like summer heat waves, which can be deadly – especially for elderly people, young children, people of color and the poor.
CV05.1. Economic, Political and Moral Decision Making All Fail Us in the Pandemic. For all the complexities of the coronavirus’s behavior, our current problem comes down to a very simple problem in rationing. We want to engage in more activities that tend to spread the virus than are possible without causing the disease to spread out of control. Managing this sort of mismatch between demand and available supply is something that advanced societies do all the time. Both economics and politics exist to resolve precisely this kind of scarcity problem.
-A. Our failure to recognize and respond to this rationing challenge has added immeasurably both to human suffering and to stunting our economy. It also is exposing the hypocrisy of our responses to other social problems.
CV13. Outliers: Coronavirus Reunites Long Lost Sisters Who Haven't Seen Each Other in over 50 Years.
CV15. Death: Nobody Accurately Tracks Health Care Workers Lost to COVID-19. So She Stays Up At Night Cataloging the Dead. The attrition of Health Care Workers overtime will decrease capabilities. It would be nice to be forearmed about approaching personnel shortages

CV20. Communication: Media to Be Banned from Republican Convention Due to Coronavirus Restrictions. Given previous mass gatherings that did not use safety measures this is probably an convenient excuse. Suspect that trusted media will be permitted, possibly only streamed to trusted audience.

CV23. Polemic, Myphysis: Could America Split Up. All week I've been haunted by a brief few seconds of video posted on Twitter. Two men face off at a protest – the one standing on the left is demonstrating for Black Lives Matter; the one on the right, sitting in a pickup truck, is a counter protester. Each is pointing a handgun at the other's face at point blank range.
-A. If there are countries that are encouraging the breakup of the US, have they considered the consequences of what a fragments US will do in the long run.
CV29. Responsibility, Decision Making: Bolivians Driven from Pillar to Post as Covid-19 Overwhelms Hospitals. In the two weeks before he died from suspected Covid-19 he was shuttled between six hospitals, as his wife battled the labyrinthine bureaucracy of Bolivia’s health system.
-A. The transitional government has been landed with a really poor health system, without economic resources, without equipment, without hospitals and without human resources. Previous leaders made museums, they made grand buildings for leaders but they didn’t think about health. How Covid-19 Has Foiled Narcissistic Leaders.
CV33. Legal: The legal principle that Shouting Fire in a Crowded Theater is understood not to be protected by freedom of speech. What has not been tested is if there is a fire in a crowded fire and someone shouts that there is no fire, or that only the theater employees or fire department can handle fire hoses, or that only one exit is permitted from leaving a theater engulfed in flames, or that there is a fire but it’s a small one and evacuation is not permitted until a certain number of people are burned.
