CV03. Information: Listicle of Facts about Covid-19 Contains Numerous Inaccurate and Misleading Claims. Claim: The overall lethality of COVID-19 (IFR) is about 0.1% to 0.3% and thus in the range of a severe influenza. Inaccurate: The article underestimates the overall infection fatality rate (IFR) of COVID-19, which is the proportion of deaths from the disease among all infected individuals. An estimate of overall IFR from COVID-19 is 0.65%, based on a meta analysis of 24 scientific studies. To date, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many more deaths than expected relative to previous years (i.e., excess deaths), including the severe 2017-2018 flu season.
CV04. Politics: Pandemic Concerns and 2020 Election: Concerns Vary by Race, Education, Party Affiliation. Although most voters say they believe that voting will be safe and that their ballot will be counted despite the coronavirus pandemic, those who question election safety and some who question election integrity appear less likely to vote, according to a new RAND survey. In addition, people who identify as Republicans are more likely to express concerns about the integrity of the 2020 elections, while Democrats are more likely to be concerned about safety – underscoring the need for election officials to communicate CV20 to the public about both issues. Trump, Biden Clash Intensifies over Covid-19 Response.
CV06. Linguistics: Thinking Aloud: Blaming and Shaming in the Time of Covid-19. Let’s address the elephant in the room, the politicization of the errors made in managing this pandemic. Most of this discussion concerns intent – “the needless destruction of our economy,” or “racism in medical care”, come to mind. Unlike The Shadow, I “know not what evil lurks in the minds of men”. No physician that I know intended to injure a patient, those that did had not committed malpractice; they had committed assault, battery, or even murder; a very different type of error. CV20↓ CV29A↓.
CV10. Spirituality, Philosophy: Resistance Through Silence in Camus’s The Plague. "On this earth there are pestilences and there are victims, and it’s up to us, so far as possible, not to join forces with the pestilences". The plague that every person carries with them is transmitted as much in the breath of our words as in a cough or sneeze. Ideological discourse that justifies violence and “rational murder”, as fascism, colonialism, and communism did, is as deadly as any pandemic. The Plague, in this sense, seems to have an even starker relevance not only in our current pandemic, but in a political world where the murderous violence of authority is condoned. CV06 CV09 CV23.

CV16. Consequences, Social Change: Don’t Believe the Lies: Church Services, Done Correctly, Are Safe. Scientists told us that church services during the coronavirus pandemic are “a dangerous environment” (Besides the othering of the over generalized scientists, this is not quite correct, any mass gatherings without any precautions are potentially dangerous). They said we couldn’t go to church, or we would risk killing our elderly neighbors. (Again I don’t know of any public health official who said this, and the threat to the elderly is outdated).
-A. That was likely true until we learned to wear masks and social distance. Now the evidence suggests that it is highly unlikely for the virus to spread during church services when safety practices are in place. Note the changed narrative, the closure of churches is based on the fact that people apparently had beliefs that their faith would protect them, and churches have been CV epicenters of large outbreaks.
-B. But even though the danger of infection at church services has dissipated, many governors continue to force churches to operate at a capacity well below a level where social distancing can be maintained. Good argument, if the danger was in fact dissipated with social distancing, masks, and if in general there was in fact less danger of CV exposure. It would be great if all religious institutions could be trusted and opened at social distance capacity, but wouldn’t that be unfair to small churches. Then there is the question of who will be permitted to attend in person, big donors, the most in need of religious solace. The source of the article is the American Spectator.

CV17. Uncertainty, Contradictions: People Infected with SARS-CoV-2 Can Transmit the Virus to Others, Even If They Do Not Show Symptoms of the Disease and Are Not Considered Sick. Claim: The greatest trick the CDC ever pulled was convincing the world you can be sick without having symptoms. Inaccurate: The U.S. CDC has not suggested that people without symptoms, including asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic individuals, are sick. On the contrary, CDC’s recommendations refer to people who are sick and people who are infected but show no symptoms as two distinct groups of people. Both groups can be contagious and must therefore follow the same preventive measures to avoid infecting others. This is supported by conflicting narratives, made more uncertain as the CDC is named as the source of valid information 200828-CV03 and invalid information 200827-CV04.
CV18. Narrative, Social Reality: Can We Cure Antivax Fear. As scientists around the world rush to find a vaccine, age old fears are giving a third of Britons pause. Speaking to some of the people who would refuse a vaccine, and the health professionals hoping they can change their mind. ADDED Hundreds of Protesters Gather Against New Flu Vaccine Mandate in Massachusetts.
CV20. Communication: Public Health's Share of the Blame: US Covid-19 Risk Communication Failures. CV06↑ 200807-CV20.
CV26. Environment, One Health: Hundreds of Animal Species Potentially at Risk from Covid-19. More than 400 different species of vertebrates, including birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, could potentially contract the virus that causes COVID-19. About 40 per cent of the species potentially susceptible are classified as “threatened” and may be especially vulnerable to human to animal transmission.

-A. Why Scapegoating Is a Typical Human Response to a Pandemic. It's happened with outbreaks going back for centuries: We blame "outsiders" (Othering). We make them scapegoats. Researchers have theories as to why. Public health groups have plans to stop it.
