CV18. Narrative, Social Reality: The Partisan Pandemic: Do We Now Live in Alternative Realities. Politics can divide even friends and families. When this happens, we like to tell ourselves that the explanation lies in honest differences in values and preferences. From this standpoint, friends from different political parties won't really disagree, for example, about the number of workers displaced in the pandemic, but they might differ on who should bear the costs. It's another matter, however, if political conflict results from differences in information or attachments to alternative realities.
-A. It's possible to disagree – but still engage – with friends or fellow citizens who evaluate the benefits of test and tracing policies for COVID-19 differently, but how do we communicate with someone who – armed with the same public information – concludes that there is no pandemic.

-A. ADDED Covid-19's Death and Suffering Could Lead Us to Rebirth, as the Bubonic Plague Did in Europe. It's important to look back and learn from those who surmounted similar challenges 700 years ago. Doing so may give us something we're short on: hope. The Renaissance, rebirth, revival, is a bit of historical myth, but even so even hope that is not based totally on fact is a good thing. CV23. Polemic, Myphysis: A Defense Expert Explores Whether the Covid-19 Coronavirus Makes a Good Bioweapon. Overall, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has some “desirable” properties as a bioweapon, but probably not enough to make it a good choice for military purposes. Regardless, it has certainly reminded us of our vulnerabilities as a society to a new pathogen, and how crippling a pandemic can be, as we continue to watch the entire world grappling with how to contain it. I have no doubt that our adversaries have been taking notes on how challenging it has been for the US to respond effectively.
-A. The other important thing this pandemic has demonstrated is that once the genie escapes the bottle, it is nearly impossible to put it back in. We lose control and the results are unpredictable. This is one reason the US got out of the bioweapon business when President Nixon shut down the weapons development program in 1969 and decided to focus solely on defensive measures. It is only a matter of time until we face this type of challenge again – either from mother nature or an adversary. Now is the time to shore up the vulnerabilities in our preparedness and response that this pandemic has laid bare. Time is not on our side.

CV31. Futuring: Changes to Public Health Bodies must Be Based on Evidence and Reflection, Not Scapegoating. An optimist would hope that, while we must acknowledge that many have suffered, the political and social repercussions of the pandemic could be broadly positive – using the experience of this virus to ensure we are much better prepared for future, possibly more serious, viruses. But this requires that those in power take a longer term view.
