CV22. Longue Duree: No More Heroes. Some years ago, I opened a presentation on disaster mythology with a brief discussion on the power of myth. This contrast between myth and reality is not unusual and many of those we celebrate as heroes may not truly deserve the title.

            -A. Amid the fiscal problems created by Covid-19, the San Francisco school board is considering a recommendation to rename 44 schools, decision that could cost millions. The committee making the recommendations does not include a single historian and “research” in some cases consisted of little more than Wikipedia searches or newspaper articles. The committee’s recommendations are an example of the cardinal sin for historians: applying contemporary mores to other time periods. Mores evolve over time and context is critical to understanding why people acted as they did in a certain period.

            -B. Heroes exist to inspire us, to reveal qualities that we may lack, and to encourage us to dedicate ourselves to something greater. That they are human, with human failings, should not detract from that but should highlight the fact that we can rise above these failings to achieve great things. We should focus on accomplishments and consider context. Now, more than ever, we need heroes.

However, the debunk will not spread widely, nor will people who believe the claim in the first place try to verify the claim. This is an expected acceleration as the claims about dire allergic reactions and Bell’s Palsy have not had the intended affect to boycott vaccines.

The list of California law enforcement agencies refusing to enforce current stay at home, crowd size and masking orders from Gov. Gavin Newsom and county health officials numbers at least two dozen, stretching into most parts of the state. Negative results of those scofflaw inactions were not obvious at first. Now some nasty consequences are clear. Leaping out at readers of county by county statistics during Christmas Week was a direct correlation between lack of enforcement and Coronavirus prevalence, infections and deaths. The numbers made it painfully obvious that inaction by law enforcement has cost plenty of lives. Lack of enforcement has also been counter productive in achieving the scofflaws’ own proclaimed goals: allowing normalcy to return sooner rather than later.
