CV04. Politics: No One Could Ever Envision a Pandemic Like this One. This statement is a flat out lie told many times over the last ten months. CV12. Personal, Relationships: New Years Day is traditionally a day of reflection, to set goals for the next year, and probably recover from a hangover. The first day of 2021 for me is different. I have reflection to do, but need far more than a day. I have a few things I want to accomplish, but basically feel adrift until the current syndemic and social problems resolve themselves one way or another. I know there are gong to be sea changes in the next months, and am pretty clear on what those are likely to be, feeling helpless to either encourage or discourage outcomes.

-*B. MORE: Feb 2022 Syndemic Theory, Methods, and Data. Many scholars and practitioners have drawn on the theory of syndemics to make sense of the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Horton (2020) suggested in The Lancet that Covid-19 is syndemic rather than pandemic, as did Irons (2020), and others have used vocabulary from the lexicon of syndemics to describe the complex ways in which symptomatic infection with the virus clusters with pre-existing conditions, interacts with other biological processes to amplify disease burden, and moves along established fault lines of society. In some cases, these fault lines have been rooted in social inequalities, such as the circumstances of essential workers who have had to choose between viral or financial risk *A. This risk was especially poignant for those working in factories, where many outbreaks occurred in the first year of the pandemic and where, in many regions of the world, outbreaks still do occur. In other cases, the fault lines were steeped in politics, as was acutely apparent in the U.S. and Brazil, where those who believed they were protected from infection – by their race, class, health, or politics – rejected masks, social distancing guidelines, or vaccines. In these ways, Covid-19 has become syndemic in different high and low income settings.

-A. MORE: Leaning Into Uncertainty: A Life of Anticipating the Worst Case Scenario. One of the most difficult things about the Covid era is not knowing anything for certain. At first, no one knew the great reach of the virus, how exactly it spread, or how many would die. Twelve months in, we are still fuzzy on the details. In a world of loud talkers that is starved of true leadership, where do we as individuals turn for information and reliable answers, The director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, Jeffrey Schlegelmilch, agrees that managing the unknown is indeed uncomfortable. But his advice differs from most experts. Rather than leading us down one path with extremist conviction, he suggests instead that we lean into our uncertainty. I would add that Worst Case scenarios are not always the worst case, can create vulnerabilities by being unprepared for more likely and dangerous scenarios. An example is being focused on worst case and very rare bioweapon attacks, unprepared for the increasingly frequent natural outbreaks.

These actions represent a departure from the usual methodology and are often unique to the specific hazard. Agent generated actions are essentially contingency plans for specific hazards. This may be reflected in revised assumptions or may contain specific instructions to responding agencies, in essence a rough draft of the initial action plan.
